Cannot Get A Card

Hi,
I Cannot Seem To Get A Credit Card Even Though I Don't Owe Anything, It's Really Annoying, The Only Ones That I Am Offered Are The Ones At @29%. I Have Done A Credit Score And Still Do Not Understand The Problem. I am now having to resort to a prepaid card instead. Any Suggestions?
Thanks

    Hi,
Yes I do have a bank account
  • Pulse90 - we need to see more information to understand how we can help... Who have you been rejected by...? What do you need the card for? (Purchases, BTs etc)

If you are under 21 getting 'decent' credit is always an issue.
If you dont own your own home that puts you at a disadvantage.
If you dont have a good credit record - and by that I mean multiple credit accounts paid on time and the account handled well, then you will struggle.

Monument / Vanquis / Aqua offer cards @ 30% but this should still give you 30 to 60days interest free.

Capital One and Barclaycard may offer you a card @ 20%

Your bank may offer you a credit card with a decent offer on it.

Places like HFC may help you - you will have to go into their office though...

Her of the indoors was given a card by HSBC which she put one transaction on and paid 10% off everymonth. She hardly uses it, and so to encourage her to use it HSBC up her limit and give her 0%/3%/5.9% offers every few months.

You may not have a credit history. This happened to my mum and she ordered just one thing from a mail order catalogue and paid it off. She wasn't turned down for anything after that! I know - it doesn't make sense that a company is reluctant to take on someone who DOESN'T owe money to anybody! Good Luck!

Are you on the electorial role?
    Any loans?
    Any CCJ?
    Any income?
When you say you've done a 'score' do you mean a copy of your credit report, or these scoring systems, that to some are worthless - see other threads..

If you've never had a loan, overdraft, credit card - while you have nothing bad on your report, it's also not showing that you have in the past managed a debt successfully. Some bank accounts(with overdrafts) don't even show on credit reports, I beleive some banks - natwest? - only report to the credit agencies if things go wrong... To prospective lenders this makes you an 'unknown risk'

If I were you I'd have taken the 29% rather than a pre-pay..No extra fees for loading and if you pay it off, no charges..This will also show on your report and eventually you'd be more likely to be accepted for a 'normal' card

Funnily enough nobobdy wants to be the first to lend someone money when they're not sure if they can get it back!!!
If you build up a good credit history, then getting credit is easier. Just because the APR is 30% (eg) doesn't mean you have pay 30% - if you pay off the balance every month on time it won't cost anything and you'll build up a healthy credit profile. :p
