I bought one for my Dad from B&Q a couple of years ago. It was a polystyrene box with the compost already inside. I think that you just had to water it to 'get it going'.

Maybe something like that would be suitable for a first attempt?
Thats the kind of thing I am looking for.

I've used the box kits years ago. Great harvest of button mushrooms but you also get lots of tiny (fruit?) flies as well.

You could always get yourself some small lizards or frogs and you'll have a free food source to feed them ;)

I've just bought one of those £2.99 kits - did you have any luck with yours?

Bought one in January, (Unwins),from Woolies, had no luck, phoned Unwins, they said they had a bad batch and sent me another one plus a £3 voucher, up to now it is as bad as the first one, but will give it another few weeks, if still no mushrooms I will phone Unwins again, as they said they would refund me.

I have the polystyrene one on the go now nd have a bumper crop. I got it from the garden centre, complete kit you just open one of the bags and put the straw complete with spores in the bottom of the box, cover this with the compost from the other bag, water, cover with lid and wait. Mine took about three weeks but they taste beautiful.
Who would like my last penny?

I'm scared to grow mine in the house as I keep reading about the dreaded flies they attract. Will outside or the greenhouse be ok?
