So long as the shed in itself had the right PP/permissions to be there as a shed, no further permissions would be required, especially as they genuinely were using the house facilities.
Which would make them lodgers, not tenants - so no notice period required on either side. Shelly and Malcolm sound like a right pair of fools who don't have much idea about the laws surrounding lodgers.
But then the other two sound a bit daft for paying £1000 a month to live in an unheated shed with no toilet facilites.0 -

We had the planning officer come to visit when we built our log cabin. We chose the biggest one we could without having to get planning permission, the officer came to check the dimensions and told us that it couldn't be used by anyone to live in. I suppose different councils will have different regulations though ?0

OP - you carry on the way you always have - and if you HAVE taken sides you have chosen the right one. This Shelley and Malcolm sound right !!!!!!!
tbh - I would be selling this idea to the beeb as a the storyboard for a sit-com! if it wasnt so sad it would be hilarious!0 -

No, l wouldn't bet on it, Shelley and Malcolm are flouting the law. I hope no-one dies in a fire in that shed.

I'll bet as well as not getting permission for the domestic use of the shed(s) they aren't declaring it to the tax office, especially as it sounds like M will be a higher rate tax payer.
So basically they have what most people would consider to be a really good income, but they have ran up big debts they can't repay. So they are illegally renting out 2 sheds in the garden to get enough money to pay the debts (or more likely keep spending like they always have).
At the best A and L might be considered lodgers, but nothing more. M obviously knows he has no legal recourse which is why he made the other threats. A and L want to tell him to whistle for his "extra £1000" and if there is any other trouble they will report him to the council for illegally renting out the sheds as well as letting HMRC know about his rental income.

Oh dear this thread made me giggle
Does sound like M&S were relying on the £1000 pretty heavily for their debt repayments, I refuse to believe that this only just covered the costs!!0 -
A shed is a shed, a domestic habitation is a domestic habitation. It doesn't matter where people are weeing and eating - they can use the gutter for the first and Macdonalds for the second if they choose - what they can't do is inhabit a shed as if it was domestic accommodation.
Look at that woman in the papers this week that's renting out her shed at £40/night. That's ancillary accommodation too.0 -
e.g.Our lodges are ideal for use as ancillary accommodation for elderly relatives or loved ones, taking advantage of a section of planning law allowing you to use one of our log cabins as an annexe.0
