i bet you would be hard pressed to find a VAT registered self employed tradsmen paying 40% tax.
i have been self employed for 14 years and under no circumstances will become VAT registered , just to be unconpetative by 17.5% and a taxmans collector ! i make a habit of not earning enough turnover each year to avoid0 -

This is just to divert our attentions from the £13tn that is taken offshore and not in our Public Services etc.
I suspect Tax Office campaigns against small traders is a similar move, and there are prominent Bankers and Corporate Big Shots at HMRC.

it doesnt matter what hmrc want to do , they simply have not got the resorces to police the self employed0
