HELP, Credit card interest BARCLAYS

Hi there i have had a barclays credit card for years which started with £500 limit
I reached that limit and continued to pay the min payment,,, been doing this for years (havent used the card for years)
however i am getting charged about £10 a month because of the previous charges the amount went over the authorised £500 so i am now being charged more
I pay them £16 a month so it is only ever £6 coming off the bill could i get some advice please

also 2 years ago i asked them if i could pay the whole amount off over the phone (i came into a bit of money) they refused to allow me to saying that i needed to go into the branch to do that!! i dont drive so couldnt get there and dont see why i should have to as i was offering to pay over the phone there and then,,, they allowed me to pay £160 off,,, but charges kept creeping back up,, i know owe over £600!!!

Unfortunately the advice won't be what you want to hear. Pay more off the debt per month and the debt will go down.

    Thats it really.

Self inflicted. You should have spent a couple of quid for a taxi to go in to a branch to clear it 2 years ago.

So make a payment that brings the balance back below £500 and also covers any additional fees and interest likely to be due.

    Pay more.

Or post a cheque. Or send a BACS payment via online banking. Or other options outlined on your statement.

Bus? Train? Taxi? Post box? Online banking?

Your line "dont see why i should have to". Because you can't be bothered they are probably applying charges and interest that exceed what you are paying. Your debt is probably rising. Your credit file is probably being trashed. All because you "dont see why i should have to".

Get a grip on this and resolve it.
  • thank you for the advice,,, i know i should have took a taxi to the branch,, i will sort this out thanks
although attitudes here are a bit harsh but good advice

Why are you only paying the minimum? Can you afford to pay more?

Are there areas of your spending that you can cut back on? What happened to the bit of money you came into 2 years ago?

Go over to the debt-free wannabe board and get them to help you cut your bills:

Or you could have applied for a 0% credit card and done a balance transfer to save paying more interest.

if you are paying 16 per month but only 6 is coming off then that means over the last two years, you have wasted £240 in charges and probably trashed your credit file (best to check about that)
  • many thanks i will ook into that, no i cant afford anymore than that at the moment, and the money i came into has gone thanks again
