Best fire extinguisher for stove

What would be the best fire extinguisher for a stove in case of fire - a water or a CO2 one?

Thanks in advance

Also consider keeping a bucket of wet sand handy to help put out a fire - or so I have been told, thankfully never needed to test the advice out :j

Speaking from a professional point of view as trained BAFE engineer, I would not recommend a water or wet liquid extinguisher for any stove fire - the reason being all fire extinguishers are stored at high pressure, you go squirting any high pressure liquid on a fire and the steam generated by it is going to blow back BIG TIME pretty much like an explosion.

The best way to deal with a stove fire is shut it down - close all air vents and phone for the fire service.

IF you are competant then you could try using a garden sprayer with a fine mist on it, this will aid cooling and dampening down the fire, which will generate steam but far less severe than an extinguisher would.

If you want to go down the extinguisher route then get a dry powder one, that will also put liner / chimney fires out.

I must stress though even if you do have / get an extinguisher you should still get the fire service out to any chimney fire, they cam smoulder away for hours even after you think its gone out, and contrary to folklore they dont charge for chimney fires and they dont make much mess.

I'd get a fire blanket to put over the fire and contain it while waiting on the fire brigade.

Personally have a mini CO2 extinguisher. Go with the theory that with a flue fire, I would dump the lot into the stove, close the door, damp down whilst the missus is dialling 999. Then get out of the house.

Until the fire becomes un-contained, I think running out and watching your roof burn down is a bit O.t.t, seeing as I have a big double glazed window to escape through next to the fire.

Co2 would put the fire out yes....but these extinguishers discharge at one helluva pressure so you stand a high risk there of shooting coal wood or hot ash back on yourself.

The second problem with co2 is that it'll put the fire out but wont stop it reigniting once the extinguishant has been used up, these extinguishers dont cool a fire they remove oxygen from a fire thus putting it out.
