What's that paint stripper paster called?

I want to get my door frames stripped. I got a few quotes but they seem to be around £700 for 9 door frames which is a bit more than expecting. Aparently, it is not a difficult job but it is expensive because it is time consuming.

A decorator told me he would use this paint stripping paste/gel because this is the most effective method as it is very toxic. You apply it to the door frame, leave it for a awhile then peel it off.

Does anyone know what this is called & who sells it?

I've just used some - Nitromors - available from DIY shops, but be careful with it - it is probably the most horrrible stuff I've ever used - fumes are lethal - outside is a must, and you have to wear gloves - even a tiny splash really burns - God knows what's in it. I could feel it burning my skin through my gloves. And it's hard work too - doesn't just magically remove paint/varnish, you have to do a lot of scraping and scrubbing. If I was fabulously wealthy, I'd pay the £900 just to not have to do it, but then again £900 is quite a lot...

Its called Nitromors, not cheap if I recall, I got it from a local DIY place. It got messy too (though I had to remove paint from around window pains), however, wearing a good pair of rubber gloves will protect your hands.

Thanks. i thought nitromors was a paint stripper liquid, not a gel which you peel off?
  • Nitromors is bad news, as already stated its pretty dangerous and protective equipment is a must. Personally I prefer to strip paint with a heat gun.

Nitromors comes as a gel (think running wallpaper paste) - you kind of paste it on. It doesn't set, the paint bubbles and then you can peel the paint away, but you'll probably need at least 2 coats depending on the paint.

I know the thing you mean, they are like wax stips for hair removal but I have not seen them for years ..maybe they were not that effective ?
Lidl have some decorating products in store on the 29th March and one of the items is a paint stripping product ..£2.49 for 500mls..they also have sugar soap at half the price of B&Q.

Edit : just found this ..click on the link below the picture of the blanket.http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/p/PALPAB/

Have you thought about ripping the plain planks off (the trim) & just stripping the rest, then replacing the trim/arctrave after?

Arctrave is cheap enough & nitromor isn't and its a horrible job.

You would still have to nitromor but not so much & you would have perfect virgin wood on the bits you really see.

I thought that might be an easier option but I have told by another decorator that replacing the wood is a lot more expensive than having the existing wood stripped!

Go to a wood yard & price it up, you will find nitromor & effort MORE expensive. You will still need nitrolmor but not as much to do:D
