So my question is, in response to OP, Of course, yes, 6 years. Is it fair then, thaT AA is not spent. KI am an only chikld driven to distraction. This is impacting on my 2 chiklren, and my grandchildren... on it goes

No, it isn't fair but it's only going unspent because those around her are being emotionally blackmailed into giving the care for free.

I wouldn't be having anything to do with such a toxic person and I would be protecting my children from her, too.

The solution to the problem is in your hands. Would it really be harder to stop than to keep living the life you have now?

people don't really tie up an inheritance into trusts do they

Sometimes the law dictates that they do. An entirely separate subject though - look up the intestacy rules for more detail

And some choose to - though it's getting more complicated with less well defined benefits

Anyway back (almost) on topic - who is actually going to do the means testing that some want? After all the government is hell bent on getting rid of public sector employment. Or will it be self assessment and made so complicated no one will apply??

It looks as if Samsaragirl isn't that unhappy with her life because she has her eyes on a big inheritance.

You can never be sure that an inheritance is coming your way until someone has died and you've seen the will.

I agree with you entirely. Why should these benefits be paid to those that are clearly not in need of the money!

I would go further and restrict bus passes to only those that are on Guaranteed Pension Credit and don't have access to a car, as well as only hand out the Winter Fuel Allowance to those that actually need it - depending on the type of heating system they have and whether there are any disabilities involved - linked again to only those on very low income.

I hear so many stories of pensioners that use the Fuel Allowance for many things other than what it is for - presents for Christmas, holidays etc.

It is not down to you to decide who is/is not in need of the money!

FYI, I have no bus pass and, as I intimated earlier, one would be no use to me anyway. We were asked last winter to give our WFA to charity and that's what I did. Heating/lack of heating does affect the joints but - thankfully - our home is well-insulated with modern heating. We got our new boiler a few years ago now thanks to WarmFront which linked in with AA.

at home with my mother, who cannot actually cope, and the reason I've been breaking downh, is to protect my chikldren.

Mothere is in total denial. Reason being, SS said 'make a stand' , so I do, and then she rings son or daughter. There is no leverage there.

I wear myself out trying to protect them.

My mother hated my dads parents and family who have, incidentelly(sp) given them inherintaces (gosh my spelling is bad nowadays) 4 houses, just a weird family.

I was told by mother the other day that it is' My Duty' to look afterem.

Very sad, as my dad looks into my eyes every day, sometimes he knows who I am, sometines says he has a boy...

Basically, if I try to make a stand she rings my kids, aqnd she put me through enough duties when I was up to 18, but she is unbelieveble

I am so, so sorry for all of this. I can't say anything that would help you. Other than that I would not go along with all this, not at all. All I can say is, I have known many older people who lost all their faculties - mobility, intelligence, memory, you name it, but the one thing they did NOT lose was a wicked hurtful tongue.

The poster says that they are both receiving the State Pension so Pension Credit is the way to go not IS.

And if dad does manage to get an AA award, they will be entitled to a min income of £400 a week - less what they get already, excluding AA by way of GPC top up.

Not forgetting the two AA awards as well and all of the other fringe benefits!!

I was referring to the possibility of the son claiming IS and CA instead of ESA - as is clear from the quote I included in my post. Not the pensioner parents.
