As said above, you can switch and they "dumb them down" since smart metering technology, contracts and comms all differ between suppliers so anything the supplier can remotely control, won't work anymore.

They don't tell you this on the advert...

    Hello Rob7893,

I will double check with our engineers with regard to fitting smart meters on the other side of the wall and post back.

With regard to switching, currently the systems needed to support the smart functionality vary among suppliers. This does not mean that you cannot switch – you obviously can - simply your experience may return to something like traditional metering until operating systems are unified. We're working on this so we'll soon be able to offer complete "smart switching".

I am interested in what exactly your idea of " soon " may be in regards to smart switching, how many years ?

Yeah, especially since Bgas don't set the policy for this country!

The DCC is supposed to be in place early next year as will allow switching of smart meters.

Hello All, it's great to see so much interest around smart meters, which we're sure will provide great benefits to UK consumers. You are right in that suppliers are moving at different speeds on smart metering. There is a lot of work to do to get business systems and processes ready but no-one is as far forward with this as British Gas.

Interoperability is a short-term problem while the industry sets up the Data and Communications Company (DCC) to handle data and communications to/from all smart meters for all suppliers. The Government decided that customers should be able to benefit from smart meters before then, and British Gas agreed. We’re currently heading for early 2013 to guarantee interoperability of smart meters for our customers.

    Thanks,
    Dana

    To Rob7893:

Hello, I checked with our field team: unfortunately we cannot move the gas meter outside as this would be a job for National Grid due to the alteration of the service pipes. Sorry L!

If you want you can arrange this with National Grid and this is normally chargeable. National Grid will quote for the work to be carried out and once the service pipes have been altered then we can attend to the exchange of the meters.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Dana,

Could you explain why smart metering works seamless within the HH / NHH markets for businesses but not residential? in regards to switching, after all its the same meters, same technology, only issue is mops ceasing sim cards.

And also why the smart metering market depends on the suppliers, I mean its not like any suppliers are metering manufacturers or even explains why a big percentage of British gas 'smart' meters aren't going to be considered a 'smart meter' in a years time? Nor do the suppliers have any communication ever with the meter.

Oh and last point, im guessing BG arent even ready for smart meters considering you still aren't following DTC guidelines for meters with communication well over half a year since the mandatory introduction of an applicable flow to RCAMR / NCAMR / RCAMY meter types.

The SMIP update for April states that it will not make it mandatory or existing smart meters to be used via DCC as there is still not published SMETS. It also states it won't apply retrospectively.

This will have to change eventually to force compliance to SMETS and DCC but we'll have to wait and see once its further along.

I recall an article regarding Bgas use of HAN that would potentially not be compliant in the future hence requiring a HAN change. Is this still the case or was your choice truly "open source" for use under the DCC standards?
