B.G.Smart Meters.
My son has been informed by B.G. that his old Electric and Gas meters are to be upgraded to B.G Smart Meters in the next few weeks if his home is suitable ( whatever that means). If he has the B.G Smart meters fitted by B.G. would the meters (being as they are B.G. Meters) stop him switching to another supplier or would things just be as it is now with the old Meters.

Nearly every meter is owned by somebody other than you supplier so no it does not stop you switching. By suitable they probably mean is there a comms signal.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Thanks for that spiro, I just thought they might be pulling a fast one, that's ok then if the Meters are going to be compatible with all the other major players as it were it will hopefully be a big improvement also they might move them to the other side of the wall out side rather than leave them where they are under the stairs.0 -

The meters will stop being smart meters and revert to dumb meters if he switches from British gas.
I can almost guarantee they wont move them, definitely not "through" a wall.Working within the gas and electric industry since 2008'0 -

Thanks for that info, Well if they won't move them hopefully the new meters will be more pleasant to look at than the old ones??0 -
Hi @robt7893, I'm Dana from British Gas. Just to confirm, the above information is all correct. Should you switch to a different supplier at any time, your meters won't be removed, however we cannot guarantee that the new supplier can deliver smart functionality.
At first sight, smart meters don't look much different from traditional meters (a bit smaller) but are much more clever! They come with a handy smart energy monitor that you can place anywhere in your home to keep an eye on the gas & electricty you use, as you use them.“Official Company Representative

Hi Diana, thanks for your comments, I suppose you wouldn't be able to tell me if they would be prepared to put the new gas meter outside on the other side of the wall We would be prepared to purchase out own box it would just be a matter of putting it on the other side of the wall from where it is now, maybe we should have a word with the chap that is comeing round to check for uitability and see what he says.0 -
We have just received a letter from Eon regarding smart meters, and have agreed to have them. They are being fitted in September if our home is suitable, and the Eon assistant said that you can still change supplier.
It seems the meters are read by some sort of sim card, but not sure about the technology.
Hope all goes well.0 -
Hi Dana, the electric smart is quite a lot bigger than nearly all the electric meters, the gas meter is a small E6 meter, as you say they a very clever things, I would like one myself as they show all sorts of accurate info. They return to "dumb " status on switching. I have seen a couple of smarts from people who have switched from First Utility to B.G who have the same electric smart meters as B.G. and the occupiers have said they dont operate as smarts.
No chance of a free move to outside, about a £1000+ to move them both outside, or even a lot more. the only time I ve ever known N.Grid do it for free is if theres been a leak outside or theres a prob with the pipe from street to inside properties0 -
And the only reason why the stop being smart is because they de-activate the sim oh and first utility wont give out their passwords to allow people to re scheme their meters. Which is needed as FU run their meters with silly tariffs!Working within the gas and electric industry since 2008'0

Indeed, the meters have sims in them that either run on CSD network or on GPRS. the data collector dials onto the meter and retrieves your reads.Working within the gas and electric industry since 2008'0
