Downgrading Contract

I have a mobile phone out with three and pay £36 a month, I dont use anywhere near the amount of calls, texts and Internet I pay for and was advised by a friend that as I'm past 9 months into the contract I have the right to request my bills/tariff be cut. I have contacted 3 and they say that they can only reduce my bill by £1.50 a month and they will take away half of my allowance by doing this? As I explained this wasnt worth it.
The friend that told me about this did the same on three and her bill and allowance were halved which would suit me, does anyone have any advise on this?
Thanks

If you got a top end phone as part of the deal then there is little chance of them dropping the costs as the cost of the "free" phone you got is built into the monthly cost.

I'm assuming at the time the Three offer was one of the best around. It is fair enough of Three to deny a request to decrease the package by much after all its what is paying the phone off. If the tariff was not right for you then the only recomendation I would have is to pay upfront for a handset next time for a lower talk plan. Its easier to get the phone for free but makes more sense to choose a plan that's right for you and and chip in towards the handset.

Three market themselves as giving you lots for your money... Sometimes crazy amounts. My only guess is that they count on people not using much to make a decent return.

Their policies do change, but across all networks, 80% of contract users do not use up their allowance, so you're a member of a very big club. As you say, it may be better to persevere and make full use of the handset on a point of principle.

Their tariffs are usually very good value, but compared to (say) Vodafone, you might find your calls, texts and data costs would be considerably higher. Cold comfort, but it does put it in perspective.
