  • Hi all,

I know this offer has ended, but I can't even find this model of laptop (5160) on the Dell site!!!
I'm after a decent spec lappy, minimum 1024MB Ram, 80GB HDD, decent video card, CD-RW drive.
    Any suggestions anyone??

    Regards

    DS
    Nice to save.

Somerfield are advertising a Medion laptop with wireless internet and CD/DVD writer, 15" screen, 6xUSB2.0, 40GB HDD, 256MB DDR, XP Home.

If you know anyone that works for Somerfield you can get this for £450.
I've got a friend that works for somerfield.. he tried to get it for himself - it's excluded from staff discount which is cheeky!

Have a look on the Dell Factory Outlet site every couple of hours, as it seems to get updated quite often. You cannot configure as such on that site but some good bargains appear quite often but you have to be quick. There is presently an offer to get £50 off the listed price, but then you have to add vat and delivery (which is £25).
  • got a stonking deal today from dixons, they were offering a toshiba equium a60-199 original price was £699, for this weekend only they have reduced it to £599, i saw this then went to tiny computers who offer a better spec laptop for £499 but they were limited to 1 per store so they had none left.
I then went back to dixons armed with the spec sheet for tiny's laptop and they bettered my deal.

    I came home with
1 toshiba laptop Intel Celeron Processor 340 2.93GHz
    533 MHz FSB
    256 Kb cache
    512 Mb RAM
    40 Gb Hard Drive
    DVD-RW SuperMulti Drive
    15" TFT display
    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
64 Mb ATi Mobility Radeon 7000 graphics
    1 year FREE warranty

    then they threw in
    a laptop case ( £34.99)
    a wireless g usb network adapter ( £29.99)
    2 x 128meg pen drives (19.99 each)
    sd memory card reader (25.00)

    all for a stonking £560.00

not bad for 1 days work lol

I saw the Tiny ad in my newspaper and checked the website yesterday, but it said the web allocation was taken. A phone call revealed there was still stock available at £499 plus £39.99 delivery charge.

If this is the same Tiny that were bought by Time then they have a very bad reputation.

yes i'm sure its the same, when i went in the shop i had intentions to buy a laptop yesterday but not from them, the guy said they are made to order so it would be around 2 weeks before i got it. i need a laptop withing 17 days for my husband to take to USA so i asked what happens if the laptop comes after my husband has left, he simply said "dont accept delivery they will send it back and cancel the order and give refund"
Not selling very well really imho.
I had NO intention of buying from tiny (whatever they call themselves) i just wanted a better deal so i could get money off of dixons and the guy in the shop very nicely gave me printed info of the £499 deal so i could go straight to dixons without having to remember all the specs from tiny lmao

Question from someone who has only ever used a desktop (tower) PC.

Is it possible to buy a laptop that can connect to broadband without plugging it in? I am on blueyonder broadband (cable) at home and wanted a truly portable PC that I can download my files (Word/Excel/Music) to.

There are so many laptops to choose from and not being au fait with laptops I don't know where to start. I do know that I want a DVD RW though (I only have a CD-RW at home).

You can connect to broadband if you have a wireless router/modem BUT I think the blueyonder/cable broadband is a bit different from others

You can buy a dvd-rw very cheaply now and it is very easy to swap over your cd-rw for a dvd-rw, I have done it and helped a very non-techie friend by just being there when he opened the tower to swap over.

There is a thread regarding laptops in the Techie Board with lots of very knowledgable people there that are more than willing to help.
