jeff26r wrote:Just got mine and it only looks to have 192Mb of RAM and no modem cable. Please can anyone confirm these two points for me?
I was hoping it may have a modem cable and it's listed as having 256Mb of RAM, does anyone know how this memory is configure, like 1 x 256Mb module?
Thans in advance.
Regarding the memory, at a guess I would suggest that although it will be 256MB it will have 64MB allocated for the onboard graphics, hence only showing 192MB.

As it doesn't have an internal modem I doubt they would give you a modem cable with it?0

hi edinburghlass,
thanks for info.
i meant a 'real life' pic of the laptop rather than a rubbish one the company has taken; in order to get an idea on its aesthetics.
this laptop will be used on a daily basis for the mentioned tasks.....and you feel it should be fine for those purposes?
i know its basic but i dont want to spend more as i have a very limited budget. the only other place is flea bay but i rather not risk that path.
i just want it to work on a daily basis well.
a p3 1.0 ghz / 256 ram that i have used it plenty fast i found so this should be on par or more i think?
thanks,0 -
All,
This is a good find but it is only a Celeron processor. https://www.novatech.co.uk do an own-brand laptop (i think the same chassis as Toshiba use) for a smidge over £500 for a v good spec:
# 15.0" XGA TFT Screen
# AMD Athlon XPMobile 2600 Processor
# 1 x 10/100 RJ45 Network Port
# 4 x USB 2.0 Ports
# 56K Internal Modem
# Glidepad with 2 buttons & scroll button
# 512MB PC2700 333MHz DDR Memory
(Supports up to 1GB)
# 40GB Hard Drive
# 1 x Type II PCMCIA Slot PCMCIA Slot
# VIA KN400 Integrated Graphics Graphics
# 1 x Mic-in,1 x H'phone/Speakers
# CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
# 1 x S-Video Out
# Weight - 3.8Kg with battery
# Dimensions (mm) - 41h x 345w x 282d
# 12 Mths RTB
This is a very good laptop, I have one, and is very good spec for the price. As is (with no Operating System) this laptop is £511.07 inc VAT & Delivery.
I would recommend this laptop greatly.0 -

This fits very nicely in with the Best value laptop under £500 thread so I'm merging the threads together0

Well I'm going to keep saying it. It's not "only a Celeron processor". It's a Celeron-M processor not to be confused with any other Celeron processor. It's basically a Pentium-M with half the cache but because it has such a large cache it hardly matters.0 -
Well I've been connecting to the internet via a socket in the laptop that looks very much like a modem port. I have used my own existing modem cable that seems to work fine.
Are you all saying that none of you have had an internal modem with your laptops?0 -

My guess is that they are using broadband modems which will be external unlike those of us who live in backward areas.0 -
Hi seen this ibm at technoworld.com. not as high spec as the others but ibms are very well built. I've had mine over three years with no problems. Would get one myself but planning on bringing an x40 back from the states when I go next.
Also you can get an extra 256mb ram from crucial.com/uk for just under £25 - you will probably need it to run XP smoothly.
