Are people that desperate for cash that they would say 'stuff it' to their principles for the sake of £40? If everyone was like the OP I think the world would be a much better place.

No, I'd have probably turned it down as well.

£40 isn't enough to compensate for the hassle of having to phone up again a month later.

I reckon £100 would be my tipping point, regarding principles! :)

£40 for a five minute phone call? Are you insane?!

£40 offered to me aswell. I decided to take it and keep the card until Sept 2012 as they said they will have another round of offers then.

I had Halifax recently begging me to keep an account open. They offered another 12 months free on purchases but it was too late as I already had a new 0% card. If they had offered me £40 I would have taken it.

Then closed it the following week.

Why say no to free money?

£40?? If I ring up and say I want to cancel mine and keep them on the phone for five minutes will they offer me £40? I have an awful feeling it would be my luck that they'd go "oh OK" and just shut it down and that would be that.

I think you've lost an easy £40 here. More fool you :)

If the OP didn't want the £40 they could have given it me and I'd have quite happily rung to cancel for them the next month if they didn't want the inconvenience :D

I gave up £50 of M+S vouchers when I switched from Lloyds TSB back to Nationwide. It's the only offer I ever got from them LOL
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

For those saying I should have taken the £40. It was the principle of it.
    Stuff your principles.

I have an easy principle that applies to commercial organisations. They exist to make money out of you. So get the best deal possible.
I felt insulted that they would offer me cash to keep the card. I wanted the card closed and be able to get on with my life. So I know it was £40 but I'm trying to get a clean slate from debt and start saving. Credit cards don't play a role in that.
Get your card in credit by £40. Spend it. Close the account. Simple as that.

I wish I could get £40 every time Mrs o4u insults me!
