Is there a tried & tested way of fading or removing hair dye?

The last few months I have been dyeing my hair black using Nice & Easy semi permanent hair dye. It is supposed to wash out after 24 washes, however, this hasn't happened. Instead I am getting regrowth.

I tried a semi permanent auburn & you couldn't even see it. So, this time I bought Nice & Easy semi in Dark warm brown.

This coloured the roots, but not a sign of it on the lengths.

Prior to using the dark warm brown, I had been washing my hair with a detox shampoo, thinking this would help lift or fade the black.

Does anyone know a working method of at least fading the dye? I don't want to use bleach or colour remover as they are far too harsh.

Head and Shoulders or any other anti dandruff shampoo should do the trick. I dye my hair lots of different colours and I often will use that shampoo to strip out the colour before I dye it a new colour. You will need to do it a few times though but it does make it fade IMO.

How does your hair feel after using anti dandruff shampoo & do you still use a conditioner?

Definitely! Lots of condition, I would get one that is extra moisturising because it can make hair feel quite dry after.

    As suggeste anti-dandruff is good

Another method i've heard of (though not tested myself)is to make a thick paste of crushed Vitamin C tablets and water. Apply the paste to your damp hair and rest an hour before washing out.

Or of all else fails go swimming-i dyed my hair red the other week and the chlorine has stripped it to a light pink! :p

  • It's so annoying that this dye isn't just washing out as stated on the box. Never has this happen before. Usually I'm having to colour my hair because the previous semi I'd used had washed out. Maybe Clairol need to check out their semi permanent hair dyes.

RE the vit c tablets. Wonder whether they would be less harsh than anti dandruff shampoos? Also, am thinking whether you could use Vosene lol.

My hairdresser told me that certain "semi perms" do not wash out and will in fact grow out. Think it something to do with if it clings to your hair or not, the colour will cling to your root hair as this is "virgin" hair so maybe this is why you are finding it is growing out instead of fading out.

  • In some respects all of my hair is virgin hair as I have only ever used either semi permanents of wash in wash out toners.

It's the lengths of my hair that is proving to be the problem.
