Which internet provider?

  • I'd be interested in knowing which ISP I should change to too - life is just too short for the trouble I'm receiving from Plusnet, and I'd like to spend less time on the phone to my ISP when there are problems. I have previously had a nightmare with TalkTalk and Virgin customer service teams, which is why I moved over to Plusnet, thinking their customer service reviews and having a UK based call centre would improve things. They were a lot more expensive on my Unlimited package than any other providers, but I thought the service would be worth it. I judge a company by how well they resolve your problems / the attitude of their members of staff. I have to say that the moment I've had an issue with my connection, it's become apparent Plusnet are no better than TalkTalk or Virgin, and infact the speed is so bad I'm sorry I switched to them. The recent problems are around my house move - first they said there's problems on the line, then they're saying the problem's with my router, it's taken a week to get a new router to me, which they then decided to send to my old address (which apparently was no longer on file...?) When I asked them to resolve it they said they'll send me a new one, up to 10 days again. They forgot to put my broadband and phone packages on at my new address, then claimed they can't because I had to wait until my next billing period before they add them (even though I was simply moving house). They've promised me callbacks from managers when I escalated the matter to try to resolve it. They're charging me when they know the internet and phone is off, another call. I have spent in total approximately 5-6 hours on the telephone trying to resolve thingss. I asked their 'moving' team - if they would help me by sending me a router on next day delivery, as it was them who'd made the error. He was rude to me, unsympathetic, and refused. So basically I have to wait again. I'm not even convinced when the router comes anything will change.

I said I was unimpressed and that when my contract ends I'll be sure to pass this feedback on. He said fine and ended the call

Ever felt like you're banging your head on a wall with a provider? Well the attitude of Plusnet's staff is making me feel so frustrated I would change provider again and pay out my contract if anyone has any better ideas? Customer service is the thing that's important to me, why's it impossible to get a good provider in the UK who just (1) is courteous to you on the phone and tries to understand the problem, and (2) when they do something wrong (a) fix it and (b) either apologise, or compensate you if they've caused you cost / frustration / inconvenience

ISP's make me fume, if you know of one that wont, I'd love to hear about them :D Thank you.
  • My speedtest.net results are as follows:

    PING - 69ms
    Download - 0.23mbps
    Upload - 0.35mbps

    Advertised speed 10mbps.

    What are your router stats?

BE are a good ISP with unlimited bandwidth, no profiling (e.g. throttling P2P) and good customer service. But they're not the cheapest.

Zen would be the obvious choice if customer service really is your priority, but they don't come cheap.
And if line faults are the root cause of your problems, then changing your ISP will make no difference.

If you can get the BE / O2 LLU I would suggest you check out xilo.net. If you do your line check with them they offer you unlimited downloads for £14.99 a month on a monthly contract, but there is about a £45 connection fee.
They are rated one of the best providers out there.

The free ones will do a farrrrrr better job than the supplied McAfee.

I actually bought McAfee some years back to clear an infection, it didnt and slung it back the next day. Swapped for Norton and then couldnt do anything until totally uninstalled, way too slow.
Downloaded various but chose the eset one and cleared what above paid for ones didnt.
I must admit i migrated to BT some months back and never attempted to load in that dreaded cd with McAfee on, i ride bare back.

But i also do alot of online shopping and free ones dont usally give you web protection.:mad::mad:

Thanks for that, I'll check them out.

Sorry I'm not too technical, how do I get my router stats?
