The main reason we went for this one is that we liked the picture and wanted a good viewing angle. You have to go by what you are after, ours also has a gaming setting, which was one of the things we wanted.
And during the winter it is useful to heat the rooms, if not frying an egg. It is pretty good if u r rich and can pay the electricity bills.

whats the gaming setting? what ever it is, wish I had it, as playing games on mine, always leaves me worrying about screen burn but as it's a Panasonic it's been ok up to now.
It seems to cut out the lag, and it changes the sound too. All I know is it is easier to play games with the gaming setting ON rather than OFF!sebastianj wrote: »And during the winter it is useful to heat the rooms, if not frying an egg. We waited a long time for them to sort out running costs before we got a plasma, heat loss is next to nothing, and it really is not expensive to run a plasma today, especially with all the power saving setting! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Have had all three and sourced a couple for relatives.
IMO plasma wins over standard LCD for all the reasons ROB says. Better contrast, real blacks leading to a crisp picture.
We also have an LG LED, smaller screen for gaming, secondary watching. I have to say it is a good clear, crisp picture that is better than old LCDs and nearly a match for the plasma. What it would be like in 40/42 I don't know. It does use significantly less electricity (33%) v same old LCD and the plasma. In a big screen power consumption would increase though. It certainly doesn't warm up the room, it is in, anything like the old LCD.
When the plasma goes I would seriously look at LED."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

oh I thought it was about screen burn, not sure of the lag you speak of as Plasma has always been faster than LCD?0 -
Comparing a small LCD to a large Plasma is like comparing a Fiat 500 with a Range Rover.
- LCD/LED if under 40" Plasma over 40" ∴ ≠
- energy consumption of both is about the same in normal operating conditions
- an LCD has a constant consumption, Plasma fluctuates ± according to the brightness of a scene
- a dark scene on Plasma will use less energy than a dark scene on LCD
- there's almost no difference between Plasma & LCD these days its so marginal its an academic, not a real world debate.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. sebastianj is posting outdated rubbish.
Game settings tend to turn off lots of the features (or gimmicks) that take a little bit of time to process, so you get a purer picture spat out faster, with fewer 'enhancements'. This does reduce lag to an absolute minimum. May also include some pixel randomising to prevent screen burn, you would need to read each TV's manual to know exactly what is being switched on and off.
And what's this obsession with a thin TV? Don't most people have boxes underneath their TVs anyway? And where do the speakers go on these ultra thin TVs? There's little enough space in the plasmas!0 -

To get you to buy surround systems on top.;)"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I personally prefer the way plasma looks, the depth of its blacks, warmth of colour, and minimal blur.
Of course, you can get a terrible plasma and a brilliant LED and find the LED better and vice versa.
Comparing my ST50 (mid range panny) to a samsung ES8000 (their top end set), I find that the blacks don't look black on the samsung, and their colours look ridiculous, and the panels rarely seem to have a uniform backlight.
Of course, some people prefer the samsungs. It's all subjective, but for me, Plasma may not be as flashy, but it is a more natural picture with more potential.0 -
Another vote for plasma. Good plasma is better than good LCD. However, you specifically mentioned that you had too much light on your screen. If you really want to turn up the brightness, you might want to go with and LCD. If you are in search of the best possible picture, you should take the trouble to get the TV out of the glare. Otherwise there's no point worrying about the small quality differences at the top end of the plasma/LCD debate.0

People will often say LCD (that includes LED) is better in bright rooms. This is because they may be able to go brighter, and they're often (NOT always) matte plastic screens, whereas plasmas are usually glass and reflective. If you've got glare coming in, you'll see a reflection on a glossy screen. That's not good. Neither is the massive white blob you'll get on a matte screen, so I really don't see that logic. No matter which screen you have, you need to move it!0
