I wouldn't tolerate his comments! Whether you've done the washing-up from breakfast or not is none of his damned business.

See if you can get some bloody net-curtains up without causing any damage so he can't spy on you.

Meanwhile I'd be looking at the tenancy agreement very closely indeed for a break-clause.

I have a feeling this man has a mental illness of some description

Get some expanding net rods .... and net curtains. Cheap/easy to put up/no fixings required. They'll drive him mad :)

My worry would be that he would just get sneakier after being told/asked to refrain from visiting without notice and would deliberately turn up to spy when he thought you were out.

You can buy spring loaded thin net/voile poles which just expand to fit the inside of a window, no fixings needed. A few voiles should bring his spying to an end.

You are working yourself into a state about nothing. Unless you are behind with the rent or you have a 6 month 'break clause' the LL cannot get you out until the end of your fixed term.

As annoying as this is if he continues to make these visits then you are going to have to get tough and cross. He has absolutely no right to do this.

Now to put it in perspective - what is the worst thing that can happen if he pops round and sees the untidy toys etc etc? He will make a comment - you will reply -'' none of your business ''(or words to that effect) If he has done this to previous tenants and still continues to do it then it seems most likely that no one has the **** to tell him to **** ***.

What is he going to do if he doesn't like the way you are living? Make you leave? Legally he can't. If you choose to go before the end of your contract and he agrees to a surrender then all well and good. This can be done. But you don't have to if you don't want to.

All in all, you have all the balls in your court.

Time to be a bit nasty with this annoying, infuriating little man.

Except for anything illegal (!) you can do whatever you like in your own home because that is what it is!!!!!!!!!!!

Now get all those toys out and stop shouting at the kids!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it is now time for you to leave some washing up out as a semi permanence and leave the kids be.

Are you keeping a diary? Any further comment from him, it is 'leave, now'. And anything more, a solicitor's letter. It is no way to conduct relations with a Landlord, but you cannot have your children bearing the brunt of your understandable tension.

I was going to say either contact your tro(tenancy relations officer)at the council (who can hopefully warn him off) or you may need a solicitor :( Again they should be able to send him a stern letter and warn him that if he persists it will be classed as harrassment).
There's one sure fire way of turning all tenants against you.. .Hmm...What an idiot.
You can also try Shelter and see if they have any help and advice for you.

If you do eventually send him a letter, do not send it recorded delivery. Rentergirl knows this is poor advice yet persists in giving it.

Send it first class post with a certificate of posting from the post office.

Stop worrying about the tidiness or otherwise of your home. Even if the place is a tip, his snooping doesn't give him any ammo because it's none of his business.

DO change the locks. He'll only find out if he tries to gain access, which he shouldn't be doing anyway!

Also, is there a way you could block his access to the back garden? (I'm assuming visitors normally come in through the front garden) i.e. lock on back gate or pile of crates in the way of wherever he's coming through. Make it awkward for him to spy - you have every right to.
  • I just wanted to share my sympathies really... I had a similar LL during my final year of uni, he'd pop around with no notice, enter people's bedrooms when they weren't there... I came home one lunchtime to find him eating his sandwiches in the kitchen!

Unfortunately, I don't know how to make it stop - I sent letters about quiet enjoyment and harassment but to no avail, he first told me it didn't mean anything without everyone's signature and later that he could enter the house whatever he wanted (and winked at me!)

I hope you have more luck sorting this out!
You were only killing time and it'll kill you right back
