True, but irrelevant if you register with the TPS http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

The TPS is probably the most toothless organisation ever created.

Since PECR came into effect the ICO has reached formal undertakings with 8 organisations, and served 9 enforcement notices against organisations for breaches of PECR, all in connection with live telephone calls.

A grand total of 9 enforcement notices between 2003 (when the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations were introduced) amd April 2012.

The telephone sales people who ignore the TPS lists must really be quaking in their boots.

Next PPI one that calls me, I might string them along. Get them hooked and frantic at the thought of being able to claim their cut of THOUSANDS of pounds !!!!

Then when I've got bored, ask if they can really manage to claim that sort of sum when the only PPI I've ever had was when Capital One "assumed" I'd need it when I registered a replacement credit card - trouble is, I spotted it on my next statement, phoned them up and got it stopped. Total PPI payment made - 10p, and I'm not sure that they didn't refund that either ;-)

Possibly the way to get rid of them is to say they are too late; that a competitor beat them to it, and that you are very pleased with the amount you received.

If they ask who handled it tell them that you have been specifically asked not to pass on such information.

They may have a tick box saying already being/been handled that gets you off the list.

  • the TPS wouldnt work here as these companies trawl and register legitimate sites for any numbers and dont give two hoots about how they operate.

My favourite is to say "My husband/wife makes all the financial decisions. Hang on a sec and I will get them." Then leave the phone off the hook and ignore them for 15 minutes, before disconnecting them without a word.

It wastes their time which is the one thing they can't afford as they call 1000s as quickly as possible in the hope a few will fall for it. After a few calls I think you will find they get the message.

I think this: http://www.filesaveas.com/truecall.html is the device that was mentioned by a poster earlier.

I've not got one and can't comment on how good it is.

A variation is to turn it into a sport. Make them the victim, not yourself.

Sound interested and pop back every 10 minutes or so and say: "Sorry to keep you". or similar I managed to keep one on the phone for 35 minutes which is my current record. I could hear him screaming down the phone before he hung up.

He then phoned back to shout "You f****** c***." and slam the phone down - which is the equivalent of a bullseye for which I awarded myself extra points.

Sadly, none of them phone me now so I seem to be off their lists and may not be able to improve on my record time. If everyone played the same game to waste their time their trade would collapsed.

Answering machine and caller ID. We never answer the phone to a number that we don't recognise unless the caller starts to leave a message. We can then decide whether to pick up or not.

.............plus you get a phone that allows you to bar (specified) incoming numbers, so if it is a UK landline calling you they get "number unobtainable" and it doesn't even ring at your end.

I also have fun with them by acting incredibly stupid and asking excessive questions. As they like to talk fast, I pretend my English is poor and get them to speak slowly. No matter how slow they talk, I keep asking them to slow down.

If I don't have the time, I tell them whoever they want to speak to is dead. They don't call again.
