  • I'm a newbie (a real one), and I've been reading through your pages of amazing information (only got to page 10 so far). I have to say that you all with your willingness to brainstorm ideas for others has made me feel happy that the world still has good, caring people. I'll also be taking info from this thread as I'm an adult PhD student, and am finding it hard to be in the 'poor college student' status again, and in a new country. Thanks to everyone who has given information!

Hi all! Im up to page 14 of re-reading this thread (originally read it a few months back)& it's so impressive what you can do for so little.:T

One concoction we have had this morning was Sweetcorn & cheese pancakes:
    Basics batter mix: 7p
    1 egg: 12p (from box of 15)
    30g cheese: 37p
    1/2 tin value sweetcorn: 10p

Make up batter mix with 1 egg & 200ml water, whisk, bung in cheese and corn.
    Ladle into frying pan.
This made 4 tasty pancakes: 2 each for me & darling boyf.

For the cheese this could be made cheaper by using a cheese on offer or basics grated cheese: I used up some left over gruyere. Using basics cheese works out to 18p so 47p in total for a savoury breakfast for 2 :0)
    First home- Oct’16 until June’21: £170.995- Overpayments made £13,784 (25% extra!).
New forever home- Sep’21 £309,449 @ 2.05%. Plan to clear it before 30 years!!!!!!
  • Kittenkirst, that sounds lovely.
If I have mashed potatoes and peas left over from a meal, I mix them together, and make pea and potato cakes which I fry until crisp on the outside and serve with a fried egg on top, with a dolop of ketchup, for a tasty cheap lunch.
