Having done week 1 of a menu for £7 with no store cupboard (for 1 person only I bow to ButterflyBrains superior talent!) I have decided to change 1 thing
Instead of jacket potato with beans for dinner on 2 of the nights I would like to substitute a tub of coleslaw for the beans Tescos everyday range 20p - instead of 26p for the beans
    Menu should now read
    Day 1
3 cups of tea throughout the day – otherwise tap water
breakfast -Cornflakes with milk and sugar
    lunch -2 rounds ham sandwiches
    dinner -Jacket potato with coleslaw
    Day 2
3 cups of tea throughout the day – otherwise tap water
breakfast- Cornflakes with milk and sugar
    lunch- 2 rounds ham sandwiches
dinner -Pasta with garlic and tomato
    Day 3
3 cups of tea throughout the day – otherwise tap water
    breakfast-Cornflakes with milk and sugar
    lunch- Beans on toast
    dinner -Sausage carrots and mash
    Day 4
3 cups of tea throughout the day – otherwise tap water
    breakfast-Cornflakes with milk and sugar
    lunch -2 rounds ham sandwiches
    dinner -Jacket potato with coleslaw
    Day 5
3 cups of tea throughout the day – otherwise tap water
    breakfast-Cornflakes with milk and sugar
    lunch-2 rounds ham sandwiches
    dinner-Pasta with garlic and tomato
    Day 6
3 cups of tea throughout the day – otherwise tap water
breakfast- Cornflakes with milk and sugar
    lunch -Beans on toast
    dinner -Sausage carrots and mash
    Day 7
3 cups of tea throughout the day – otherwise tap water
    breakfast-Cornflakes with milk and sugar
    lunch-2 rounds ham sandwiches
    dinner-Pasta with garlic and tomato

Now working on week 2 with the following carried over from week 1
    carried over to next week:
    3 portions of pasta
    4 sausages
    19 days worth of teabags
    9 days worth of cornflakes
    half a head of garlic
half a tub of sunflower spread
    half a bag of sugar
    plus 15p

If there's no freezer, do you suggest cooking the sausages to stop them spoiling? Would cooked sausages last well enough to be carried over into the next week?

I wouldn't cook the sausages to keep them, a packet of sausages should keep for around a week anyway, if you have easy acess to a supermarket maybe by them on day 3 and then eat the rest early in the 2nd week.

does anyone acually eat 2 rounds of sandwichs? i'd feel sick if i had 2 rounds for breakfast. Anyone who's finding things tight and wants to buy ham tesco new price drop book has a £1 off £3 spend of cooked meat, i don't buy value ham but if you had a freezer you could stock up and freeze it, you'd get 2 400g packets for £2.30 (they also have £1.50 off £6 of cheese and catherdral is down to £2 so 3 blocks for £4.50)- problem is this does rely on having more than £7 a week or else thats you weeks budget gone.

She has PM'd me Rosie, she is a medical student and as such does some awful hours, but she does appreciate what we are doing for her. Her Mum has come up trumps and given her some store cupboard stuff and herbs and spices. There is a Morrisons Aldi and Lidl close by and Asda a few minutes drive away
Her Mum gave her a tin of Mackerel and a tin of sweetcorn and she has mashed them up to go in sandwiches, which I might try :D

Thanks for that BB, I take back all I said about having suspicions ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Butterflybrain@ quintwins. Thank you for those menus and lists I don't need personally at the moment myself. But I am going to print them off and keep them. You never know when you need that "just in case" emergency food plan. I hope that makes sense.
    Thank you

Sausages should keep for a week in a fridge if kept in an airtight bag.

Most fridges also have a icemaking compartment - you can freeze small amounts of food in there (I used to have to do this as a student), it doesn't work as well as a proper freezer but so long as you use it within a month its fine :)

All well and good in an emergency but otherwise an incredibly unhealthy diet full of high GI carbs & sugars and barely any protein or veg/fruit!!

That's exactly what this is - an emergency menu. I would never suggest that you lived like this all the time. It was an illustration of the fact that all the wonderful recipes that use proportional prices e.g. something like "a pinch of chilli powder 5p" don't work when it really hits the fan because you can't use them if you are starting from absolutely nothing (think of all those poor souls who got flooded out this summer); the supermarket won't let you just buy 5p worth you have to buy the whole thing. Yes it is unhealthy, yes it is monotonous but at least it proves it is possible to keep body and soul together if you find yourself in this mess until you can start to dig yourself out.

i don't think for £7 you can expect much really, aslong as it means your not hungry and still alive theres not much more you can expect, i wouldn't recommend anyone trying to live off £7 a week long term.
