Hi there
I will confess now to being a numpty so please be nice and sympathetic with me!! Would really appreciate your advice if you wouldnt mind taking the time to help me please?
My mum is nearly 60 and she wants easy access to email/facebook/websites - limited downloading, maybe some photos. I want to get her a netbook or tablet (she has said she wants one)- my budget is £225 tops. She has broadband at home.
Basically what is the best thing to buy and how can she access wifi - will i have to buy her a dongle (look at me pretending i know what i am talking about!!) Can she carry on with her broadband.
sorry i am really embarrassed for not knowing but if you dont ask you dont get help
i need the thing by friday
thanks hugely and gratefully xxx:A

The new netbook or tablet will have a wireless network adapter (wifi).
This will be used for the wireless connection of her home broadband, and also for public wifi hotspots (free or paid). If she also requires internet in places where such a connection are not available, then she needs a mobile broadband dongle which uses the mobile phone network. These are available PAYG or with 1 month/12 month or longer contracts.
Bear in mind that netbooks particularly have smaller screens than laptops, so it's a good idea to let Mum try one instore first. How do I add a signature?0 -

Are notebooks better than netbooks, I read somethingabout it on here a couple of days ago
Does your mum have Sky at home.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
A Notebook is a laptop.
If she has broadband at home, does that mean that she already has access to a computer?
Does she intend to travel with the machine? If not, then surely it is better to have a laptop than a Netbook. Easily doable within your budget.
A Tablet again is useful for mobile users.
So, why not a laptop?0 -
I love my laptop, I sit in the lounge, watch the telly, do emails, surf the net.
Never felt the need to take it with me to be honest.
Laptop is recommended from me.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I meant the meaning of out and about. Examples?
Will she be dependent on HotSpots for Internet access whilst 'out and about'? My mum goes out and about, but I can hardly see her lugging a tablet around whilst doing her shopping.
But you seem to want to get her a Tablet, so give us some scenarios.0
