Hurrah! Finally got deposit back

Gave the keys back on the flat on 21st June, but tenancy ran to the 28th. Since then I've been chasing and chasing and chasing for my deposit back. Today I finally got it.

They tried to charge me for two things that were already broken when I got there. One was on the inventory, marked as broken, the other actually wasn't on the inventory, but I thought I'd told them about it later, though I can't find evidence of that. They also wanted to charge me for a broken floor tile, which I don't remember being broken at all. I asked where it was, and if they could provide a picture so I could compare it with mine, and they seem to have then decided not to charge me.

I said I would go to the DPS arbitration scheme if they wanted to charge me anything, and that I wanted the balance of my deposit back. No news from them, but after further chasing, I got the whole deposit back this afternoon.

So, here is what I've learnt: First of all, check the inventory thoroughly, and make sure you tell them about anything you find later, and keep a copy. Second of all, take photos when you leave (as I did), and I'm sure photos at the start are a good idea too. Thirdly, don't be afraid to stand up for your rights and finally chase, chase and chase again - they will keep your money as long as they possibly can!

I won't name them on here, obviously, but they are in Leicester and if anyone wants to know I'll answer a PM. :)
