Postage on Ebay goods

I won an auction for an item on Ebay yesterday evening but haven't yet paid for it.
The seller has just contacted me to say that as I live in N. Ireland they will have to charge twice the amount for postage than that stated on the auction due to the size/weight of the item.
Where do I stand in a situation like this, where the seller asks for more than what was stated in the auction after it has finished?
I have sold items myself on Ebay before and when I've miscalculated postage I have just taken the hit as it was my mistake. As the item hasn't been paid for does this make a difference to where I stand?

You may be in the right in absolute contractual terms, but enforcing it through the courts would be ridiculous. Either cancel the order or pay the extra if that's what it costs he seller - maybe he didn't realise that the courier price he had for mailmand UK excluded NI, but NI could still use ebay.co.uk of course! It is a bit rubbish for NI residents and those of the Scottish islands etc, but I doubt the seller is acting in bad will

OP, as you have mentioned 'postage' more than once, can you confirm whether you are talking about courier or Royal Mail?

If courier, then Paddyrg is right.

If Royal Mail, then the seller is trying it on.
The price of Royal Mail postage for an item to be sent anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland, is exactly the same... assuming the seller is also in the UK.

I should have stated courier rather than postage.

What were the terms and where did they say they would post to?
If they didn't stipulate only to or postage dependant on X location then they should not ask for extra.
Their fault if they did not do the right terms in the sale.

Tell them to ship or cancel the sale (don't cancel it yourself) and complain to eBay if they do not comply with their own terms.

As far as I can see the seller only shows one P&P option and that is United Kingdom at £11, and NI is indeed part of the UK.

    I suppose it depends on how much you want those "3 metat garden planters" and whether or not £44.88 delivered is still a good price for them even if it is more than £33.88. So I would have thought the choice was between;

    (a) paying the extra to get the planters or
    (b) saying no thanks, and reporting them to eBay as a non-reforming seller if so inclined
  • I don't sell on ebay..but does it not usually cost more to deliver to NI? If so I would have asked for delivery cost to NI.

    Service and other details:
Economy Delivery Within 8-10 working days £11.00

Northern Ireland is still part of the UK (United Kingdom of Britain & Northern Ireland), therefore is classed as internal and standard UK postage applies.

    its does with RM.

Theres not much the OP can do
they can choose not to pay the extra and see if the seller sends/refunds
they can neg, knock down stars etc. however its an error on the suppliers end that they havent added details that NI shipping is more expensive.
