Ground rent

Hi I am new to this and hope someone can give me an answer please. I own my own flat but have to pay ground rent to the landlord. Am I obliged to pay this in advance?

Can't tell you without looking at the lease.
Most modern leases require it in advance but older ones didn't say it was to be in advance and therefore by default it could only be collected in arrears.RICHARD WEBSTER

Thanks for your useful response. The lease does state in advance but I'm just wondering the implications if I paid in arrears. What could they claim for? Surely if I pay it the landlord is not out of pocket so cannot claim damages, interest or any other fees?0 -
If you don't pay your ground rent as stipulated in your lease then you will be in breach of your lease and your landlord (freeholder) could take steps to reclaim the property.
That is the worse case scenario. The lesser of the evils could be that you are hit with penalty/admin charges for making late payments.The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

Yes, he would be out of pocket, for the period he did not have it. So yes, interest charges.
And he may have to send you reminders - admin and postal fees.
