Tesco Horror Story

Yesterday in my mixed salad (which came from a local organic farm, not pre-washed) there was a massive slug, which climbed onto the side of my bowl and looked directly at me, waving it's two tentacle things in the air. I felt quite bad for it as it had been sitting freezing it's nuts off in the fridge and then had a thorough washing from me before being seasoned. It's now happily in the neighbour's garden, chowing down on their vegetable patch.
Yes that slug was indeed a survivor. I'm glad you gave it another chance!

Several months ago I found a grubworm
at the bottom of my (washed) salad bowl after I had made myself a tuna salad. I had eaten most of the meal when I came across it and felt sick for days after.
Contacted Tesco (online purchase) and was told they had tried to ring me (no they hadn't) and would get back to me.
Did they! No even though I contacted them several times.
Recently contacted them about another issue to receive a message saying sorry we are too busy to call reply please contact this free phone number!!!
So a letter has gone to head office and I have also mentioned the grub and the fact they never came back to me. Don't hold out much hope of a response or a caring response but we shall see.
Update - Well they responded to this letterI was refunded on one product (the recent issue) and also given a £25 voucher to spend on my shopping.
No real apology just a bog standard reply:

but at least they did not dismiss this contact.
I will also add I seldom buy bagged salad but on that occasion I wanted something different to what was available to buy individually and I guess I got added extras for my moneyEverything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
I never knew slugs had nuts !!!! (We have a blinking slug and snail epidemic around here atm )
OP I think you said you've just moved out from home so I'll assume you're fairly young and childless. I think people reacted at your description of "horror" as a bit of over-reaction. It's just one of those things that happens with "fresh" food from time to time and a reminder that you do need to wash/rewash fresh fruit and veg. Wait til you have kids who think slugs and snails are fascinating and bring them in from the garden to share with you !!Ten pounds honestly was fair compensation.

I don't find supermarket food goes off any more quickly than that which I get from the greengrocer.
I don't buy pre-packed salads, though.
I actually find that supermarket fruit and veg goes off less quickly. Which is somewhat of a concern - especially when I find a forgotten apple three months down the line and it still looks 'as good as new'. :eek:0 -
The slug may not have had nuts but it certainly had balls in order for it to scale the side of a salad bowl and just glare at me, giving me "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" with it's tentacles.
To the OP - well done on getting your money! It's grim to find it in your salad but as my mother says "it's all protein". Yuck!0 -
Thank you everyone for your responses, particularly those who provided useful feedback. It's obviously a more common thing to occur than I realised. Like I said in my original post, I have only just moved out of home so clearly this is one of those life lessons to be learnt.
Yes I agree that my title was slightly melodramatic, however I truly was quite distressed about the situation, more so because we had already eaten some of the product when we discovered the moth. If it had been sitting on top and I had found it before using the product, I would be nowhere near as upset about it. I'm not about to have nightmares about it, but it was distressing to me, regardless.
I have no intention of trying to take things further and will be more careful with 'ready to eat' products in future.
Thanks again for those who took the time to respond.
I would have been more than distressed hon. And I did have nightmares about it reading that it happened to you :rotfl:Trust me. I would have been screaming like a school girl being chased by a boy!!! Oh I hate those things so much. Brought the laundry in the other day and there was one on a towel. I didn't think I could scream so loud, the fella had to get it out and I had to rewash the laundry!!! Gross!!! The fear of them is really horrible for me and wish I could beat it.
I wasn't dissing the trauma btw, just saying that this kind of thing can happen with prepacked veg etc.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
They used to fly into my room at night and you'd hear this thwacking sound as they flew at speed around the light fitting which was pretty gross, then one night a BAT flew in, whacked me on the face with his wing which woke me up and proceeded to fly around the light fitting as the moth usually did, and that put the whole moth thing into perspective. I would far rather have a moth doing the hokey-cokey in my room than a bat, but I wouldn't want to find either dead in my salad!
I guess it's also quite telling about how these things are prepared, a slug is one thing as that came off the salad where it was naturally living, but I assume a moth flew into the factory or if it was living in the spinach that's not a good sign either.0 -
I'd be annoyed but I don't get the whole 'loyalty' thing. If someone spends a certain amount on a product and it isn't up to scratch it shouldn't matter if you've shopped there forever or if it's your first time.
Oh I disagree.
Any business that knows what it is doing will normally do more to look after their loyal customers more than casual customers.
This is because loyal customers mean more profit.0 -

What if a child had eaten the moth? will none of you think of the children?
I was told by a relative recently that i used to, as a kid, actively hunt
woodlice to eat0
