Tesco Horror Story

Have you told Tesco what you expect or would like as a form of compensation and or apology?
To be honest, if you don't give them any indication of what you expect in return, you can't blame them for offering you the bare minimum Though personally I'd be chuffed as little meatballs with a tenner.0 -
Talk about over reacting. What would you do if you found a screw in a hot cross bun?0

You know, I find myself disagreeing with the majority of the posts here.
I think it is a serious matter. I do put washed bagged salads 'straight on the plate' (OK into bowl with dressing first), and I use washed, bagged spinach as a salad. That is what they are designed for, to be used straight from the bag without further washing.
It isn't 'just' a moth. It is a dead moth, and it is decomposing over a few days trapped in an airtight bag with a moist organic substrate. It is the equivalent of a rotting piece of potentially contaminated meat kept in a wet bag that is possibly going to be eaten raw. I say potentially because chances are that it wouldn't cause any problem at all, but it might.
I don't think this is a matter of needing any extra compensation - I fully understand why posts like this can get people irate - but it does suggest that it is something that Tesco should be taking seriously. Their production line failed and they should be investigating why, and making improvements if necessary.
Perhaps they are doing this, and the blah letter and £10 gets sent out irrespective of what other action they take. But the way to make absolutely sure that action is taken is to report any food hygiene breaches to the local environmental health department rather than the supermarket. They can assess the risk and take it forward with the company concerned if necessary. They won't give you £10 though.0 -

That's a joke, right?
But if it isn't I now know why TS are always incredibly busy and take yonks to do anything.0 -
Oh No! Another newbie dissatisfied with a major supermarket chain!
The original post could easily have been written along the lines of:Praise for Tesco
Today I bought a bag of washed ready to eat salad. The one time that I don't wash it, I find a dead moth amongst the greenery .
However after complaining to Tesco, they apologised and gave me a £10 voucher :T
Same story, different viewpoint.

OP - I think the response was adequate. These things do happen, years ago I had a caterpillar in my frozen peas.
I never wash things before cooking and/or eating them and my family are healthy (probably have good immunity built up over the years).
Moths are probably edible anyway0 -
Hi all
I hope no one interprites this as 'well they are just money grabbers' but I would like some opinions on a drama we have had with tesco recently.
My family have always shopped at tescos for as long as I can remember so as soon I moved out with my partner three weeks ago, we straight away started shopping in tescos as it is familiar to us.
We did our first weekly shop including lots of fresh veg (desperately trying to start our life together healthy!) and a bag of 'washed and ready to eat' spinach. I always ALWAYS wash fruit and veg before eating it however because the bag specifically said 'washed and ready to eat' I thought I would save some time and leave it. I cooked a meal that evening including the spinach and when finished, was putting the leftover uncooked spinach into a container to keep them fresh when I pulled out a massive dead moth. No exageration, it was about two inches long. Obviously we were utterly horrified, even more so because we had already eaten a meal using the ingredient so god knows how many germs we ate.
We took the bag and moth straight back to tescos and explained how disgusted we were and that we were changing supermarkets and they said they would start the formal complaints process and we would receive a response within three weeks.
I received the response when we got home last night and I don't have it with me to quote (would have been a good idea to bring it in to work with me!) but basically a summary of the response is as follows:
- we apologise for your recent experience
- we do strive to achieve high levels of quality
- our customers have said they want us to use less pesticides and chemicals on our fresh produce therefore mistakes like this can happen
- you should always wash fresh fruit and veg thoroughly
- here's a £10 voucher as compensation
Maybe it's just me, but as far as I'm concerned, the above response is completely unacceptable on so many levels, they made it sound as though it was our fault and took none of the responsibility for the error. Does anyone agree? Moreover, £10 compensation is more of an insult than if they had given us nothing but at least a sincere apology!
When we originally said we were changing supermarkets, I admit it was a fairly empty threat and although we were disgusted, we always intended on going back and accepted that it was a one off error, however now I am livid and we will no longer be shopping at tesco for good.
I would like to take this issue further but am not sure who to write to or whether there is even any point? Is there a body who deals with complaints like this? Surely the Food Standards Agency or someone would push this further?
Does anyone have any thoughts and/or similar experiences?
Too much waffle here, I hope you wouldn't include all this in your complaint letter.
Cant see how they made it sound as though it was your fault, they have just apologised for what has happened. Why would you like to take it further and for what reason ?
I have to admit i didnt wash soem salad leaves when i had some the other week for my lunch, to be honest i couldnt be bothered doing that but generally you would wash anything like that so you know you have washed it and theres nothing there that shouldn't be.0 -
Come on OP, let's not over react on this!Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0
