Halifax PPI

Options
I've read up on the PPI claims couple of years ago but now with the constant annoyance from these claims companies who all want a 30% chunk out of it , I have decided to do it by myself. I am a newbie at this kinda thing so go easy!

We took out a mortgage from Halifax in 2001 and also took contents insurance and a mortgage payment insurance or something along them lines , I will have to check. I have all the details including mortgage account number but I can't seem to find any details on the mortgage payment insurance account number ?

I have filled out the template which I have found on the MSE website but which number do I need to put on , the mortgage account number or the PPI account number ?

Seems straightforward enough and the sort of thing most people do for obvious reasons (mortgage being a big debt and very important)

Is yours paid standalone by direct debit from your current account or paid in conjunction with the mortgage?

You put the policy number typically as it is not normally embedded with the debt (one of the main reasons why most MPPI complaints do not succeed).

Thank you for the fast reply .

    Paid in conjunction .

I also took a credit card from Halifax and took out credit card repayments cover.

Edit : I have found the certificate of insurance for the mortgage repayments insurance , it has the policy number and the policy scheme number . Should I send a photocopy of this certificate to Halifax as proof ?

You can send a copy to help them identify it.

Before you make your complaint though, make sure your reasons are solid and provable. The MSE list of reasons is correct but a number of them wont succeed alone if you use them. Some reasons also mainly apply to loan or credit card. You may want to run the reasons by us here so we can give our opinion.

I feel the MRI was missold because I wasn't told that I could buy it elsewhere and also that the MRI is an integral piece to the mortgage. I also had considerable savings at the time which would have paid the mortgage off for the next 6-12 months. The emphasis which was placed on this MRI I felt as it was compulsory and not optional , had I known I would not have taken it out.

Not a valid reason for complaint. There is and never has been any requirement to tell you that.
and also that the MRI is an integral piece to the mortgage.

What evidence do you have to support your allegation?
I also had considerable savings at the time which would have paid the mortgage off for the next 6-12 months.

That is not considerable. Generally, personal provision is an amount in excess of your emergency fund (which is typically 6-12 months income).
The emphasis which was placed on this MRI I felt as it was compulsory and not optional
    An unprovable allegation.

The problem you have is your complaint is very weak. In most cases you would expect a rejection. Halifax are an exception to the rule as they have taken an auto payout stance until recently with regards to the PPI element (but not other insurances).

agree with D, had our Halifax Mortgage ASU complaint upheld week or 2 back but we had phone calls and had to supply evidence to back our complaint up.......you will need to have evidence to back your complaint up because they are not auto upholding any longer, it will be studied in detail.....i think you may need to think about how you are going to approach it and get your info ready before setting it out so you can see where you believed you were mis sold and what illustrate to them where they went wrong......good luck

Think I should leave it as you say my case is weak. I do have the MRI brochure/literature and other letters for the MRI policy but I'll look into that later , if I have to look for any specific phrases or such let me know. Thanks

Do you think I should fill in the questionnaire provided on this website and send it to the Halifax , just to see what happens ?

Halifax only discuss Halifax products. This doesnt make sense.

You are complaining about a monthly PPI policy to protect your mortgage payments. Its still considered good advice to recommend PPI on mortgage. Dont muddle this up with single premium PPI on unsecured loans or credit card PPI with hidden costs.

what i would do is this:

1.Get all your info as to what was charged by the Halifax and what the policy covered you for.try and recall the exact circs in which the sale took place ( ours occurred in the halifax bank branch, we were able to give names and dates - i dont know if this was helpful to our case but it wont do you any harm )

2.think back as to who you worked for, what benefits you had as an emplyee ( ie sick pay, PHI ( private health insurance ), redundancy cover etc ).

    3. Try and recall what you partners benefits were if applicable.

    4. What savings did you have in the event of acc/sick/redundancy to cover you.

    5. Did you have any personal health insurance cover/BUPA etc.

If you find you had significant cover and assurances from all angles when the policy was sold to you, then you may be able to argue that it was mis-sold. I am no expert on this, there are many more on here who know so much more. All i am stating is the way we approached it.I didnt go at it from the "she said this and we said this angle " because that is so hard to prove.

Once you have all the info and can look at what the policy covered you for, then you can make a decision yourself on whether its worth pursuing.

    Good luck my friend.
