How did banks and credit companies decide to give people credit before the CRAS?
Old-fashioned methods like actually speaking to customers and knowing who they were, that sort of thing0 -
They would take much more affordability type questions - income, rent/ mortgage, all other debts (limits and used), average expenses etc. They'd also ask for you to provide evidence to substantiate all of the above with payslips, bank statements etc
Arguably more thorough and accurate with honest customers but much slower and easier for dishonest customers to hide things.
Of cause you also used to do 95% of your lending etc with your bank, you didnt have everything spread over a dozen companies0
