Cutting losses with car - best way to sell

Don't normally post on here, but looking for some advice. I have a 55 reg Peugeot 307 which has been nothing but trouble since I bought it. In the last 3 months I have had to replace the exhaust, 4 tyres (not the cars fault I know but still an expense) and the radiator.

It has now broken down again and I feel like I am throwing good money after bad on it.

Once I've got this repair done, I'm thinking of selling it, I believe from valuation sites that I could get around £2,000 for it.

I do need a car, but having just cleared my HP on this one, I don't want to spend more than I get from selling.

What is the best way to go about this, I know a dealer will not give me the best price, so interested in your experiences.

I'll be replacing it with a smaller car that is a more reliable make.

Put an advert in your local rag, or slightly more expensive Auto trader. That way you will get a much better price than by trading it in at a dealers.

I know how you feel, i've had problems with mine recently. In the last 3 months I have needed a new battery, new alternator and 2 new tyres. The car is all paid for and I didn't really want to replace, but its getting old now and I'm wondering what's next!

Just been told it is a front spring that has snapped, so will need to get both replaced, waiting for the quote.

Will get an ad in the local ASAP

It's all consumables that's being listed, you could buy another car and need to do the exact same within the year.

Unless you've had a lot of other things go wrong that you've not listed, I'm struggling to see why its been trouble and you want to get rid.

Except the radiator, everything you list is a normal consumable and would need to be done on a car which was reliable just as much as one which isn't. And you now have a car with 4 decent tyres ready for use.

Broken road springs are increasingly a fact of life, alas.

Remember, most people sell cars at this end of the market for a reason - whatever you buy next could be worse than the one you have - especially as you've made the investment in the tyres etc

I realise it is all consumable that I have listed above, I guess I just hate the car as I have had to get the recovery people out to it around 10 times in 5 years, which is far more than any car I have had previously.

It gets services regularly, and I do low mileage, but I do realise that any car will need things replaced etc., I just feel that a different make might be more reliable in general, as well as the car being bigger than I need and therefore more expensive in general than a smaller car would be.

Actually, realised that I am probably just being emotional. I had decided after replacing the exhaust to keep this car and run it into the ground, mostly because of the resons mentioned (recent investment etc). Now I know what the problem was this morning, and that yet again it is just because the car is old, I should just stick to my original plan which was put the money I was paying to HP in to a pot to buy a lovely new car when I have saved up.

At the £2000 mark any car you buy will be a potential risk.

It probably wont have new tyres and an exhaust etc though. So theres a few future expenses to save for.

Why does it break down?

If its got a fault you will be lucky to get £2000 for it.

It's ok, I've come to my senses, will stick with it and get my money out of all the new parts.

There doesn't seem to be any one fault, has some issues with starting up etc, but no one has been able to find anything causing the problems consistently.

crank sensor causes intermittant starting issues on the 307 as well as the inline coil pack. fuel pumps in the petrol version are known to cause issues.

We had a customer who wanted to PX her Vectra Elite for this reason - she said she was sick to death of spending money on it.

She's had a radiator, tyres, springs, central locking bits, exhaust etc... So when it came in PX I bought it for my neighbour as I knew it'd had loads spent on it recently.

This was 3 years ago and its never missed a beat since lol.
