Ebay is full of gadgets, some work well and are cheap
Anything PIR is good, like a wireless doorbell that senses people approaching.
Make sure security lights blind them, instead of help them see what they are doing.
We have a security light that has a camera in it, with SD card, put it high up by an upstairs window so you can reach it from indoors
Use pricky thorny plants, climbing roses, pyracantha, flimsy tall fences can be a deterent, they cant climb them.
Burglar paint is good, its stays sticky and deters.
Use gravel on paths .
Keep bins / ladders etc away from fences / houses, dont help them get over/in
Alarm padlocks are great, I use them on bikes, sheds, barrows etc. Cover with bag in rain.
Old fashioned gate bell helps too. Or put flass milk bottles where they might kick them over making a noise. Plastic m,lik bottles with gravel in them make alot of noise if ncoedk off a ledge.
Mark all property with permanent marker pen, they cant sell it, so wont nick it, and dont want to be stopped by police with it in their possession.
Clean windows reguarly, to give scenes of crime a chance if the worst happens.
Most important - if you see someone breaking in, dont just shout at them to go away, RING POLICE :j
if you see anything sus, if its a burglary/attempt in progress you should ring 999. If youre not sure but think its a bit sus, or happened earlier, ring 101 for any police force.

Two more tips:
Put all your high value goods on Immobilise
http://www.immobilise.com/
and, if you have double french/patio/conservatory doors invest in one of these

A lot of break ins happen by throwing something solid through glass doors then opening them from within. The padlock will slow burglars up and also ensure they can only take things which will fit through the gap they have made.
The majority of break ins come through householders leaving their windows and doors unsecured!0
