Best way to secure back of house?

Following a spate of break ins in the area recently I really should be better securing the rear of our house.
Have a sensor activated security light.
I have uPVC french doors secured with the standard shootbolt style mechanism and a couple of sash locks top and bottom.

Was looking around Homebase yesterday but there doesn't seem to be anything else I can add to them?

Also our back garden gates stand around 6ft high and backs onto a service road-how could I best deter potential intruders from climbing over?

Any ideas please ....

For the gates use anti climb paint.

There is another product called guardcam that I have used recently on a commercial premices that were suffering from copper theft, since fitting them there have been no further thefts. The guardcam has an internal cctv camera that saves video or stills to a memory card inside, upon detection of someone walking by it can either play an audable message or quietly start taking video or photographic evidence.

One other thing you could do is look at marking property with a uv pen or use smartwate, smartwater is a unique dna based liquid that invisible except its glows under uv light, many police forces now have uv lights in their custody areas specifically for this reason. 100% conviction rate for offenders caught.

A decent monitored and maintained burglar alarm should help deter at least, and would protect the whole house, not just the back.

Should also reduce ins premiums, so :money: too ;)

Use Prikka Strip along the top of the fence.

Agreed, a deep voiced dog is probably the best deterant but the running costs are tricky, :D

This can be a difficult one, how much security do you add to your house before it turns from your home into your prison?

Use good quality locks on your gates, doors and windows, use smartwater on your items, put a safe in your house to protect important documents, spare car keys, money etc.

If your house looks like its too much trouble for a thief then hopefully he will move on somewhere else.

if a thief has targeted your house then he will attempt to gain entry, no matter what security you may have installed.

Contact a local locksmith and see if he/she does free security surveys. Also ask your local police for a visit for some advice.

Cheers guys-some good ideas there.LIke the Prikka strip!

Anyone know if its available at B&Q?
I was also thinking of running trellis along the tops of the fences -or do you thing that wouldn't be much of a deterrent?

Trellis will make it more difficult to climb over the fence, plus they tend to break and make noise when someone tries to climb over it,, alerting either you or your neighbours. Prikka Strip is not available at B+Q, AFIAK, but it can be bought online quite easily.

The whole point of this exercise is to make your house a less easy option than that of your neighbours, these scarabs always go for the easiest option, make sure it isn't yours ;)
