Moving house - overlapping contracts?

Options
We're with Virgin and moving house to a non-Virgin address (will probably go with BT as we want a TV package) and we'll get the new house on the 9th of August but probably not actually move until the 23rd.

Can we start a new contract in the new house before the service in the old one ends without causing ourselves (or the new tenants in our old house) a nightmare? I'm thinking that we couldn't use a MAC code if we want the services sumultaneously. I guess it wouldn't be a problem if the changeover was seamless, but is it really, these days? (when we last moved house, 6 years ago, it took days and days to get the new broadband up and running, despite being assured that it would be seamless).

Mac codes only come into play if you a transferring providers on a line at one address. As you're moving you can set-up with who you want at your new house and get your old provider to cut the services on the day you leave. That is unless you need to take your phone number?

You can only have one broadband service on one line at the same time
And you'd be mad to waste your money on BT Vision-why pay for Freeview with a bit of on-demand content? YouView is here and will consign BTV to oblivion-and not before time.
As above, a MAC does not apply to a different number, nor to a cable to ADSL transfer.

Thanks both, very helpful. And I won't be leaving the next lot of tenants being stiffed with a reconnection charge or something? (I don't know if I can take my number with me anyway.

I know that BTVision isn't much more than freeview, it's the box and access to on demand content that we're more interested in. YouView doesn't tempt me at the moment, very expensive equipment and I've had bad luck with these kind of things breaking on me, just outside their warranty and with no cost-effect repair available. Given that BTVision is £4 a month, I'll take that as equipment rental for the moment. I'd be much more interested in YouView when the upfront investment comes down.

If you buy a Humax then you are most unlkely to have any hardware issues. BTV also ties you into BT's expensive broadband product for 18 months.
