Ok, so the story goes like this. My OH got me a blackberry last year on contract. Was £30 a month or so. I hate it! Blackberrys are awful but hey, i have it now im stuck for another 12 months...
I rang up 02 the other day and asked to lower the tariff as i literally use less than 300 minutes, paying for 900. Dunno who on earth OH thought i would be speaking to!! haha
They said they can only reduce the tariff ONCE in the contract, which is to the next lower tariff.
Im now down to £25 a month for 5000 texts, 600 minutes and 500 of Internet.
My question is : Can they really only reduce it once? I dont even want to use the thing, or can they reduce it again for me?

O2 don't exactly make it clear on their website, but it appears after 9 months of your contract you are permitted to move down a tariff once per month, but the tariff you move down to must be the next one down from the tariff that you originally commenced the contract with. I would ask your OH for his copy of the contract (assuming he kept one).

Can I change my Pay Monthly tariff?

New and upgrading customers on 12, 18 and 24 month contacts may not move to a lower priced tariff within 9 months of connecting to the Network or upgrading. After 9 months, you may only move down one tariff, per month, to the next lower priced tariff to the one you originally connected or upgraded to until the end of your Minimum Period unless you pay us the difference between the monthly subscription on your original tariff and the lower rate tariff we agree that you may move to. If you change tariff, any unused rollover minutes will be lost.
With SIM Only tariffs, you can change you tariff after a minimum 30 days and a maximum of once per month.

so lets say package 1 is 100 mins, package 2 is 200 minutes etc,
I start of with package 5 5oo mins and then upgrade to package 9 900 mins. The lowest i could get my deal to would be package 4 (the one below what i first started with)...sorry its confusing :s

they will only allow one tariff reduction per month from month 9 on-wards and the maximum you could reduce to would be one below the one you started on originally.

When you take out the contract they base the price of the handset on the revenue you are contracted for. They have to stop you from reducing your tariff too far otherwise they will be selling the handset at a loss.

Maybe look at selling your handset on ebay or something and then use this to pay off the remainder of the contract?
