I'd go for books, lego or craft stuff.

I really can't stand people assuming girls want pink sparkles, dolls etc as I hated and still do pink and buried dolls at the bottom of the toy box. Ditto "my first kitchen", my little pony (freaky things) and so on. On the plus side the local charity shops always did well out of my birthday and Christmas presents :T

my little pony! i love my little pony:) the new ones are great and fairly cheap. especially if you spot them at tk max

i just got my goddaughter a grow your own sunflower in a tin, i know she'll love looking after it and helping it grow!

otherwise i second books! my friend's five year old son will be recieving one of the DK readers starwars books. DK is a reading scheme for developing readers but they do cool characters and they're all in colour and bright to encourage kids to read themselves.

That's really lovely. It's out of stock anywhere near me, or anybody who might pick it up for me. :( Nice work finding it though. I'm off to browse Argos for more ideas.

I'm a big fan of Story Cubes:

Small item. It's a set of 9 dice - instead of numbers, each side has a picture on it. Kids (or adults!) roll all the dice at once and then have to tell a story involving each thing shown.

It's great for good old-fashioned imaginative play. They're marketed as age 8+ but we got them for a 6th birthday present and the girl absolutely loved them and takes them everywhere. Her 3 year old sister even likes making up stories, though struggles a bit sometimes. :) Apparently they like using them to make up their bedtime stories too. :)

    Hi Jacks

Last weekend I bought a birthday present for my goddaughter who turned 5.

In Claire's Accessories they have cute Hello Kitty bags for £12, and lovely HK purses for £5.50. I bought a shoulder bag with HK glitter and a cat head shaped purse.

    She'll be thrilled. :)

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
