Just to elaborate a little......
Turn the laptop on. In the corner of the very first screen you should see a prompt similar to what fwor posted above. Common keys to get into setup are F2, F12 and DEL although there are others. You need to press the key whilst the prompt is still on the screen so if necessary restart the laptop and press the setup key as soon as that screen appears.
The (BIOS) setup menu will appear. The exact layout and how you navigate can differ, but you will see instructions on the screen. As you navigate through the screen, be careful not to inadvertently change anything.
Find the option to change the boot sequence. The HDD needs to be either the first boot device, or the second (with the DVD/CD being the first). Change the order if necessary, then exit saving the changes. The laptop will restart.
Then report back.How do I add a signature?0 -

if you're in BIOS and the CD drive isn't the first boot device, CHANGE IT NOW SO cd drive is first boot device and hdd is second. It'll be easier to sort out with a bootcd later if needs be......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
just wanted to bring you up to speed after your help eveyone

You can, but if you go for new parts it's only worth it for something very recent. A secondhand mobo might be viable, but labour cost needs to be factored in.
However, if it's getting as far as trying a network boot, it's not a full-on mobo failure. It might be the SATA/IDE interface on the board, but HDD still sounds more likely at this stage.0 -
