strange message on laptop not working

laptop is not starting up just has black screen with a message saying no connection check cable and just keeps repeating it . its [wifi] have checked modem, and internet light comes on then goes off cable from phone to modem is connected ok laptop has been getting very slow online for the past week and just under where powe line goes in on the laptop gets very hot quickly
any ideas what lve done

hdd starting to fail - set the bios to boot from a cd, and on another pc download hiren's bootcd, burn the image to a cd, and boot the lappy from that

Yes, HDD = hard disc drive. Hope you've got backups of all those "irreplaceable" files.

ok it says:

Looks like it's trying to do a network boot.

This may still indicate a HDD problem, but one other possibility is that the BIOS config is messed up and the boot order is wrong (this can happen if the BIOS backup battery is close to dying).

It would be worth checking in the BIOS setup to make sure that the HDD is still shown as first in the boot order.

The BIOS is the very first thing that runs when you start the laptop.

How you check varies from make to make, but usually immediately after you power on you will get a message like "Press Del to enter setup". If you do that you will view the BIOS setup menu.
