Hire Car Fuel Dispute

Mr & Mrs AO hired a car for 9 days.

The hire car paperwork stated that the hire car would be full upon issue to ourselves. The Check Out paperwork does not indicate this, only in the T&C's.

Car was returned, Mrs AO 100% certain that the car was full as filled it the night before (£60), then after a 150 mile journey back to the car hire place (£21).

The car hire rental place was closed, so no "Check In" signatures could be obtained. So we left the keys in the drop-box.

We have not received a bill for 14ltrs of fuel, which equates to about £40 in charges. Mrs AO still 100% certain it was full, as she put it in & I paid. From the garage to the car drop place is <200mtrs.

We failed to keep the receipts from the garages as we have never had a problem with this firm.

We have emailed the large company, stating that we dispute the charge/fuel required. They have not yet replied, and are looking to go with a Chargeback.

I ask...

Is it for the Hire Car company to prove that it required 14ltrs, or is it for us to prove that it did not require 14ltrs?

    Hi,

Can you prove you paid for something - bank statement?

I would ring them & complain .... email is a waste of time.

    £40 for 14 litres
I know what i'd tell them.

I'm not sure a chargeback would be successful. The card issuer is not there to be involved in these kind of disputes, but to attempt to recover money mainly in situations whereby you don't receive goods or unauthorised charges for example.

Send them a copy of the bank statement along with a strongly worded letter.

    Unauthorised Charge?

I would say that taking the £40 for the fuel was Unauthorised.

Well they will have a signed document to proof op authorised the charge in case there is a fuel short fall. So it really comes down to whether op can somewhat proof their claims are invalid

Do we know that the hire is in the UK? OP can you please clarify.

It wouldn't be an unauthorised charge as you provide your credit card for charges to be made. There may be a dispute about the amount of the charge but the charge itself isn't unauthorised.

Even if the OP can provide fuel receipts, how would they be able to prove that the receipts related to the hire car ?

The hire car is a UK based company, operating worldwide. The car hire was within the UK.

We have asked the company to prove that the car required the amount of fuel that they have charged us for. Research from google appears that this is not the first time it has happened, and providing a copy of the fuel receipt has made the claims go away.

This is the first time the rental was carried out without all the "extra insurances", when we have hired it 5 times before without any fuel issues.

I could provide a copy of the bank statements showing the payments, though this would not shop fuelling amounts etc.

The dispute has been settled, well the problem has been solved.

I can confirm that the Hire car firm was once again Europcar. I have never had a problem with them before, and prefered to use them over a handful of other UK hire car companies available from the same pick-up location.

I liked the idea of not having any hassle from them, and the car being ready to go when i arrive as it usually involves a 4-5hr drive onwards. Dropping off is usually the same, as i grab a Subway sandwich whilst filling up after the return 4-5hr drive. Not this time i guess.

To recover the costs, we asked them to prove the debt which they admitted that they did not have the receipt for the fuel provided. Pretty damn hard when the hire car was garage is <200mtrs from the pickup location.

    Not good..
