Exemption for car tax - changing vehicles

Options
Need a little advice on current system please

Currently have tax exemption on one car
Need to change it to another car we own as that ones now off the road for repairs
Obtained a replacement certificate which is now sat waiting

When I go to tax one do I have to remove it from the other and return to DVLA before or can I tax the other then drive there (which I am hoping to do in that car) and change it at the dvla office there and then when I remove the tax exemption

Thanks
One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb

It depends what you mean by return it to the DVLA, if you mean post it to Wales and try to make the change in a Post Office it may slow down your transfer to a replacement vehicle.

If you mean go in person / or send someone to your local DVLA office see below.

    - take the original 404 exemption certificate
    - the tax disk from the old car and documents, log book etc from the old car
    - take or complete on the premises a V10
    - and docs for the replacement car such as insurance / test etc to the local DVLA

Theres a lot of good will from the local DVLA to disabled people they usually go the extra mile to be helpful. Different people may have different experiences because at the end of the day you are dealing with a human who may be having a bad day, but generally the local DVLA have direct access to info that the Post office don't.

Has our new car got an tax on it at the mo, it wouldn't really be worth driving it to the dvla office, as there is a chance u could get stopped, is there anyone who could give u a lift down there? x

Thanks for this, I have the same issue as I have changed cars. I took my documents into the POst Office and was told that I had to send the reg document to DVLA to be ammended - but the document says it can only be done when taxing the car (it still has 3 months tax). It looks as if a trip to our local DVLA office is needed.

I've taken one off disabled tax and know that it's a via post or DVLA office job it's the taxing another in the mean time that I have the query with. No it's not currently got tax hence I'd rather tax it while waiting for the other to be taken off disabled tax which is off the road anyway

    - of course not, - you are entitled to a free tax disk regardless of cost / engine size

    - for one vehicle not two

    - if the vehicle without a valid tax disk at the time is caught or even just parked on the public highway .. .. let alone being driven on it, its a road traffic offense

Walk, bus, taxi, get a friend to drive you to your local DVLA with both sets of docs [see #2] and the tax disk and they will transfer the disk in such a way that you are legal in the replacement car from that very moment. It will also be the case from that very moment that your old car will be illegal and must now, by law, be SORN'd you can do that online or better still do it in the local DVLA office.

Because you appear not to understand I'll put it this way. If you want to tax your new car while the old car is still taxed you will have to pay for it yourself out of your own money.

    Best of luck !

The old car has the disc on but hasn't been running/on the road/had wheels on for 3 weeks hence I applied for the replacement certificate as it will be off the road for some time so it does not need tax and not used as the main vehicle for transporing the claimant after it is fixed, but yes thanks that's more clear

    - I now understand
    - in that case take the old tax disk and both sets of docs to the local DVLA
    - they will if you ask (1) transfer the remaining months from the old to the new car
    - and if you ask (2) issue a SORN on the old car

In fact what they actually do is [assuming the 404 exemption certificate has 12 months to run / or pro-rata] cancel the old disk altogether, and reissue a brand new full 12 month tax disk for the new car.

I bought a new car and garage did all the work on taxing new car for me. I then simply removed old tax disc and returned it. I was assured by DVLA direct that a short cross over for 2 cars having disabled tax was OK as they understood the reality of getting it all sorted.
