I adopted your dog today.......(Poem)

I adopted your dog today.........
The one you left at the pound;
The one you had for ten years
And no longer wanted around
I adopted your dog today.....
Did you know that he's lost weight?
Did you know he's scared and depressed
And seems to have lost all faith?
I adopted your dog today.....
He had fleas and a little cold;
Guess you don't care what shape he's in
- You abandoned him I'm told
I adopted your dog today......
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies
Or was there NO reason he couldn't stay?
I adopted your dog today.....
He doesn't play or even eat much;
I guess he's very sad inside and
It'll take him time to trust.
I adopted your dog today.....
And here he is going to stay;
He found his FOREVER home
And a warm bed in which to lay.
I adopted your dog today.....
And shall give him ALL he will need;
- Patience, love and security,
So he can forget your selfish deed.

Wow what an amazing poem!
It reminds me of what I always wanted to say to my late Boo's first home. They just took her to Battersea at 8 and said she's your responsibility nowFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
Those words are so true. That made me cry walwin, I have seem all too often people "getting rid" (I hate those words,) of a pet thats outgrown the lovely puppy stage so become unwanted. As long As I live i will never understand how anyone could do this.
Thankyou for posting it, Do you mind if I share it please xxxRIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Always in our hearts xxxHe is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader.He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.0 -
What a lovely Poem walwin and how true that people just 'dispose' of dogs that they have grown tired of, especially older ones that have perhaps developed illnesses or have got incontinent, they can't take care of them in their twilight years as a thank you for all the love and devotion the dog has given them.0

I adopted a dog from breed rescue a few years back, he had been passed from pillar to post. At around two years old, he had already had five homes before me. Well, he certainly wasn't going to have any after me, he was stuck with me for the rest of his life.
Yes, he had problems, he'd been beaten and starved which had left him with issues. It took time to sort him out, but we got there in the end.
I often used to say to him that I wished his previous owners and the dog trainers I sought help from who also didn't seem to know what to do with him could see how he had turned out.
I was his last chance, even the breed rescue were going to have him put down if I hadn't been able to sort him as they felt he had been passed on enough. It was lucky for him I came along and took the time to try to understand him. He made a lovely dog but passed too soon from a brain tumour at 9 years old.
RIP Max.0 -

It made me cry too Chris and unfortunately I couldn't copy and paste so had to type it out so was in bits by the time I got to the end.
I've been in tears a lot today and all because of what is inflicted on poor dogs.
Please do share Chris xx0 -
Walwin...that's beautiful. Left me in floods of tears though.
It's so sad when people just uncaringly dump a dog that loves them more than anything in the world.
Thank God for people willing to give them a warm, safe forever home.0 -

Oh Dollardog, how very sad for poor Max in his young life.
I'm so glad for him that eventually he was one of the lucky ones who did find a lovely forever home with a lovely Mum.
Such a shame he couldn't stay with you for longer0 -
My first cat had been messed around, her most recent adopter returned her to the RSPCA with the comment "cat won't settle".
God only knows what they were doing to her. That very first night in my home she curled up on my lap and then slept on my bed, and settled in for 15 happy years.
One of my current mogs is also a rescue who was so terrified of anyone and everything that she spent her first three weeks cowering behind a sofa (after I fished her out from behind the washing machine which was where she squeezed herself when I first opened her box and left her alone to explore her new home).
I made a bed for her behind her chosen sofa, took all her food to her, and went to bed early so she could use her tray (she would sneak out to it when the house was dark). Eventually she came out - very hesitatingly - from behind the sofa, but it was several weeks more before she would leave the room. I shudder to think how she had been treated to make her like that. She's an old lady now, still nervous but very affectionate, sleeps all day on the sofa, and on the bed at night.Je suis Charlie.0 -
I have one little issue with that poem. Most people who have a dog for ten years (more than two thirds of the average lifespan of a dog) and then "give it up" usually do so due to circumstances beyond their control and not simply as an act of callous, selfish behaviour.
I understand the sentiment behind it but it would be a shame if people who have been forced into such an unenviable position were made to feel worse because of it.0 -
Fantastic poem.
My bridge baby Abby came to me at 8 or 9, she had been a show dog but her previous owner handed her in to a rescue as they no longer wanted her. I had her for just over 3 years and she was the most loving wee dog and very funny. I now have Ellie a Bichon who was used and abused in a puppy farm, she has lots of problems but she is very slowly getting better and tomorrow will be her 1st gotcha day :T:T.0
