Hi Claire, I too have been picking and the guilt is overpowering! I feel terrible about myself. I too have done CD before and am really having trouble getting back into it. Louise said the first time you do CD is the golden time and I totally agree, I stuck to it properly the first time and now cant stick to it at all!

I am interested to hear that you tried OA, I was thinking abut trying that as I have a huge problem with food, but then the thought of speaking out loud to strangers does not fill me with joy;)

I am glad to know I'm not alone on the vivid dream front! I'll try to enjoy them in future but they do make me a little anxious. I have visions of waking up in the kitchen with the remnants of a massive binge in front of me trying to remember how I got there!

You don't have to speak straight away, I went for about 4-5 meetings and didnt say a thing. But I knew one day that I would have to and I couldnt face spilling my feelings to a bunch of strangers, I can't do it with my partner never mind people I don't know.

There is a book called the twelve steps and twelve traditions of overeaters anonymous, have a read of that and it will help you to decide if it might be good for you. I read it nodding along all the way, it was as if it had been written just for me somehow.

Sometimes it helps just to know there are others out there with the same problems.

No guilt. Never feel guilty. It's always your choice and you do what you feel is best at the time. You aren't harming anyone other than yourself, and if you chose to sabotage your efforts, that is entirely up to you....no reason for guilt;)

I mean that it in the kindess way...I promise. Been there....done that and all.....
but then the thought of speaking out loud to strangers does not fill me with joy;)

For me, the answer wasn't to speak out loud to strangers, but to find the right questions to ask myself. (We're talking about when I got to goal..to help maintain) i.e

Why do I have to eat this now, when I know I can have anything I want whenever I want. Why not in an hour? Tomorrow?

Why would I want to sabotage all my hard work? What have I got to gain by it?

Why am I craving this or that? Is something else going on? Am I hungry, and if I'm not hungry food isn't the issue.

People say they overeat because they love food. It's not true. Well..not completely. I find food tastes even better now, because I do actually taste it, rather than just shovelling it down:o It's not to do with a love of food...much more complex than that.

I'm a strong believer in 'addictive desire'. (do a search on minimins for addictive desire...I've written waaaayyy too much on the subject :D

Oh a lighter note. Maintenaince is possible and possible for everybody whatever diet they do. There is hope folks;)

for me, it's definitely a boredom thing, when I come in from work I was always bustling round getting tea ready, same on a sunday, go to the farm shop near to where we live, buy and then cook dinner, it takes up almost the whole day. Sometimes it feels as though my arm has been chopped off!

Definitely need to do something to get over the boredom.

Doesn't sound like a boredom thing to me. Why would you be bored after being so busy? Perhaps you use food to relax. A reward for all your hard work? You've got into a habit of thinking that is what you need. Possibly?

  • I know I use food as a reward, I have a hard day, get dd in bed and my treat is a nice big dinner, some TV and some peace and quiet. Having a shake gives me nothing to look forward to.

Yes, but isn't it strange how we chose food. Why food, when we know how many problems it causes us?...yet it continues. There are other ways of rewarding ourselves. In fact, watching the TV, getting peace and quiet is a reward in itself, but we have to add food.

Food is tied up with so many emotions. Do you notice that you go for food after a certain chain of events? It maybe the turning on of the televisison, or after the first set of adverts whatever. There is a ritual there.
