Please think about children too. Discuss the issue as a family. I know what a hard issue it is to think of. You are talking about unthinkable events, of losing your loved ones.
16 years ago my 1st baby died aged 4 days. I offered his organs because I wanted to feel that his death wasn't in vain.
I also thought that if I would be willing to receive a transplant then I should be willing to be a donor.
Little was I to know that years later the shoe would be on the other foot...
6 1/2 years ago my son received a heart transplant aged 7 months, following a harrowing time with him on life support 70 miles from our home, for 4 months.
He is now 7 years old and living a normal life. A day never goes by that I don't send out a thank you to the amazing family that gave us the most generous and bravely given gift. They lost their lovely boy in a road accident but made the decision to help another child. In fact, their son saved a number of lives.
What an amazing legacy.
Obviously, its not for everyone, but I think it would be good if everyone made a decision one way or the other rather than just not thinking about it.
Also, remember that you are more likely to need to receive a transplant in your lifetime than to become a donor.

Actually I think that it is great that this has been raised.

Like manypeople I am sure I did not know that carrying a donor card meant that you didn't have to register on the site. I have carried an organ donor card since I was 12. I will be going to register on the website.

so thanks for this

i do agree with you, very much so that the first post could definatly have been phrased better, maybe along the lines of, if its for you, join up,
i do hope some people do discuss it with family & friends, and decide to sign up. and for anyone who doesn't want to thats fine too, its a personal choice, i just thought how nice it was to be brought into the open and maybe make people consider it when they might not have realised family/friends etc need to know. i never realised that having a donor card wasn't necessarily enough, so for me its made me think more about it,

160.

I've taken your advice and adjusted the wording of the last statement on the thread so that people will hopefully think and discuss with Family before clicking and completing the form.

I would sign on but I have this fear I would wake up suddenly while they were taking stuff - no kidding, I really do have this fear.

i have a morbid fear of them taking my eyes, no idea why, but i have actually specified they can't take them on my card, anything else but not that.

also i have made it blatently clear i want burying not cremating as i have a fear of waking up being burnt, i know logically a burning would be quicker than suffocating under ground, but its just one of those strange things i feel.

so don't worry your not alone.

The man who teaches me law, his mother was a nurse and she told him never to carry a donor card, because if you had a car crash for example and you were carrying one, the poeple who were trying to save you may not try as hard because your organs are worth more than to keep you alive.

Dunno how true it is!

I did the donor thing when i passed my test, i said everything but my eyes aswell. I just cant do the eye thing.

i doubt its the case they don't try as hard, but does make you think. probably just an old wives tale, lol, but still make me shiver to think about them not trying as hard.

glad i'm not the only one with the eye thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
• I totally agree, organ donation is not something I really gave much thought to, but then my kidneys failed and I was on haeomodialysis and my only hope was a kidney transplant. There is not a day that goes by that I dont thank the wonderful family of my donor in my thoughts, (as I was not allowed to know any details other than it was a young child that died of a brain clot somewhere in england), but if it wasnt for the childs family I would not be alive today and my daughter would be without her mother. I celebrated my 1st transplant anniversary on 21.03.07. Since then ALL my family carry donor cards and are registered with the Organ Donor Data Base, myself included - although I have told them that they are not able to take my kidneys as you are not able to re-transplant a transplanted kidney. But Give it plenty of thought, and talk it over with your loved ones and think about signing up ... As there is no gift that you could give somone after your passing than the chance of life.

My Dad had a heart transplant in July 97. We can never thank that family enough. Not only did it save my Dad's life but it had a big impact on the rest of the family. My Dad walked me down the aisle and both my sisters, my son spends a lot of time with his Grampy which we would all have missed out on. Most of my family are now registered as donors and also give blood regularly. I think that it is important to raise awareness at every opportunity, thanks for posting Orinmore.

i wholly agree with the principle of organ donation and think it is a fantastic service, the people who sign up (and thier families who honor their requests) are to be congratulated

i have to say i don't think this is an appropriate forum for it's discussion though, there's a time and a place IMO

I did this a few weeks ago. They can have the lot, I won't be needing it. But I do understand other people's fears.

What a dreadful rumour to spread about the health service not trying. Its that kind of rubbish that stops people from signing up as donors.
Just looking to save a few pennies here and there
