Thanks for all your suggestions. I have taken some photos and would really appreciate some experienced advice! It's a ford focus sport 06 plate, 4 door, light blue, petrol, manual, great runner with full service history etc. bought from one previous owner 2 years ago for around £5800.

My question is, with the images below showing the scratches, is it worth my while repairing them and then selling it on autotrader, or just accepting that the gains made by the repair wouldn't be worth the extra sale price? Are there realistically any other sale options than Autotrader? I hear the webuyanycar.com adverts but I'm suspicious that they would just fleece me.

Having never sold a car before (this was my first purchase), how much would i expect it to have depreciated by now?

Pics are below, thanks again for your advice!

There's a fair bit of damage there. Nothing "major" but it all adds up - the wheels look a bit scuffed as well!

Bear in mind, the Focus is a very popular car, so there is plenty of choice when buying one. Unless you are happy to price yours well below similar immaculate examples you may struggle.

Have you tried getting a quote for just the worst areas and trying to do some yourself?

I wouldn't mind, but the fear is that I badly screw it up myself!
  • by looking at the pick the deepest dents seem to be in the metal work and 2 i can see will need a puller on it, there will be no point in filling 2 of those (deepest one in the door, and the one in rear arch), the one round the light will be easy, appart from the chip on the courner of the light rim, this will need drilling plastic resin filling and reshaping, i would try and get a bumper from a scrappy or fleabay the same colour it would be cheaper than repairing it.

as for the door with wolvereen scrapes touch up there would be noticeable the door will need painting and blending into another panel the area to be repaired is too large and the one with the long scrape and dent in it will also need repainting and reblending into another panel, coupled with everything else you want doing, its an all over paint job in my opinion. small independant body shop i would take this to, you maybe looking at £750-£900 for the repairs to areas concerned and a fresh lick of paint and laquer all over.

You'd be better off tracking down a bumper in the same colour than trying to repair that one. It will work out far cheaper. You'll find that the colour may vary slightly but paint reacts differently depending on substrate anyway so even on brand new cars the bumpers are often a slightly difference shade to the bodywork.

In the metalwork, you're going to end up spending more than you'll get back on it if you sell it as it is. I wouldn't waste your time. It's not a new car so buyers normally expect the odd bump and graze.

good suggestion, get a new bumper fitted.

I cant tell if this is blue or grey, but use this product in your colour. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Turtle-Wax-T4091-Polish-Chipstik/dp/B002Q0LOMU/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1344296303&sr=8-8

Obviously it's not going to have the same effect as a complete paint job but it will temporarily conceal the scratches quite well. Be warned the concealed bits will come off after a good wash and couple of heavy rain sessions.

use some old shoe polish on the tyres as well.

Why dont you try http://www.autobodycompare.com to get a load of estimates from bodyshops in your area... At £1500 for the previous quote, you might as well sell the car with the scratches in!

The chipsaway quote was £1.5k! Because all 4 panels need a degree of touching up/re-spray. Let's see what the others say!
go to body shop you can have the whole car re lacquered for that.

Tip have a look at the cars they are working on to get an idea of the level of workmanship tho remember the customer could of specified a first class job with glass flat paint or a budget job full of orange peel

Some of the "scratches" could be machine polished out by an expert

The dents ? depends how good the dentmaster repair type of guy is
but they do look expensive to repair

we buy any car would knock pounds and hundreds of pounds off

It all depends what you want in £'s

    if you want for example

£4500 for the car as it is ,dents and bumps included

advertise it for £5000 and knock off £500 which = £4500 realistic price ?

    or

£6000 for the car looking like a new car , cost to repair the car £2000 .... you loose £500 which is £4500 + £2000 for repairs

,this assumes you advertise for "6500 and knock off £500 .....
