You could check the 3G coverage.

We did the same, moved from cable area to a small village. ADSL, lucky if we got 0.5 Mb/s.

Went over to 3G, and despite many worries about reliability and usage caps, it has been the best alternative to slow ADSL.

Between about 2.5 and 4 Mb/s, 15GB data, which is ok, and good reliability, cost £18 per month. ADSL just can't compete, except on price.

    Sam knows for me:
    • ADSL is available in your area
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support
    up to 0.5Mbps via ADSL
1.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
    2Mbps or greater via ADSL2+
    Standard ADSL RAG results

    • You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
    • You cannot receive 1Mbps ADSL
    • You can receive 512kbps ADSL
    • You can receive 256kbps ADSL
You are approximately 3.32km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!
Is pretty much spot on as I have been upgraded from ADSL via ADSL2 to ADSL2+ Currently I get about 2.5 Mbps down.

As I have said before cut your bell wire on internal house wiring! This does make a difference!

So are there ways in which an improvement can be effected(the area does not have cable) even if one has to throw some money at it. It's a nice house but this could be the dealbreaker.

    Advice very welcome. :)

Yes. There are villages that have sorted out their own fibre and some are getting 100mbps. Downside is its £10,000s and thats with the villagers digging the trench for the fibre optic cable.

If you're not doing gaming so latency isn't an issue, see what a mobile broadband network coverage such as Three is. Where I am I can get >4mbps with Three.
