    Hi Kal

I am an ex-member of David Lloyd, having been a member in England for about five years, and then transferred to Belfast when I moved over here in 2004. Since then I have moved too far away from Belfast to make membership of the club viable, so have left it. Otherwise, I'd still be a member now.

Anyway, just as a ballpark figure, I was paying £57 per month back in early 2004. Is that a lot?? Probably, but I was paying over £80 a month in England for the same deal so to me it was a bargain, lol. I was a regular user though, and was there at least five times a week, but more usually six, so on a per visit basis it was cheaper than a pay as you go arrangement at the council leisure centre.

I have only ever had single membership and was a peak time user. They do deals for couples (don't have to be married etc, just two people who join at the same time though I think you're supposed to be living at the same address), deals for off peak membership, and I think there was something for students and au pairs as well.

On top of your monthly subscription they will ask you for a joining fee - you can negotiate hard on that, maybe even get them to waive it altogether. Sorry but I can't remember how much I paid but I seem to recall people paying different amounts hence my comment about negotiating.

The club itself is fab! It is very well equipped, the changing rooms/showers are excellent, there is a nice bar/cafe area you can hang about in for a drink or a meal etc, opening hours are long, hairdresser on site....

I'd suggest you give them a call and go and see for yourself and discuss their prices with them - you won't lose anything by just looking and talking. I don't work for them, honest, but I got a lot out of the club and for what I got thought the price was reasonable. BTW some bloke or other who reads the news on UTV is (maybe it's "was" now) a member, so if it's good enough for him...

    Hope that helps.

I would go with LA Fitness or that new JJB gym at Boucher. A guy in my class was saying that its really cheap for students, about £19 a month. So i imagine it would be reasonable all round. LAFitness sometimes do 2 for 1 offers, where you pay £30 a month each for a platinum membership which allows you to use any LA club and you get a towel (woo hooo) each time you go.

Went to see DL today and it is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!! However the membership I want would be £78.50 and £25 joining fee which is not soo fantastic - guess I can always dream
  • £25 joining fee!? you got lucky, when i joined 18 months ago it was quoted at 125!?! but because i was coming from LA fitness he said he would reduce it to 25?? basically i think the joining fee is totally negotiable.
i would have agreed that its a great club but as of january they stopped all student discounts, senior discounts, guest passes and seen to be focused on cutting corners everywhere! i must say that the facilities are very clean compared with LA or council gyms. The restaurant serves overpriced low grade food, but it does have a bar :)

Queen's PEC is also worth a look - it's been upgraded a lot recently and they're trying to attract new members. Think it's around £40 a month for full membership including classes etc. Only snag is that it's very busy Tues to Thurs but it is a lot quieter at weekends etc.
  • At a LA fitness today as a couple: 73 £/ month. We are looking to change to DL, but will cost the double.
Anybody goes to Maidenhead DL. How much do you pay ?

I'd agree! The PEC actually only costs £33 a month for full membership now. The gym is great and the changing rooms etc modern and clean. The pool is a full sized pool and, whilst not the most modern, it serves its purpose.

What the PEC is great for is its range of classes. There's loads and it's a gret way to try out a new activity. Similarly, because its membership is drawn largely from the student population there isn't the same attitude and nowhere near as many posers as you find in other gyms.
  • Be careful of the T&C's of the gyms. A friend of mine recently left David Lloyd club and had to give 3 months notice which is excessive. She was paying around £80 per month for her membershop which included racket sports.
