Too scared to fly, able to claim??

So i was supposed to go to Ibiza for 5 days this past week.
Monday to Friday.
Flying from Leeds Bradford with Jet2.

When it came to it, i got on the plane. Sat down, and then the panic started.
Im chlaustrophobic but have always managed to calm myself down before and have flown.
In recent years iv flown to Vegas and Egypt, Greece, Spain etc..
This time i just couldnt do it. I was hysterical and in the end made the decision that i couldnt fly as i was about to be holding the plane up.
My friends stayed on the plane and went on holiday as normal. so some of the party flew. (this was my choice for them to stay, cannot ruin their hol too!)

Just curious if i can in any way reclaim some of my lost money?
The flight back was obviously not used.
I have insurance through Viring but cant really find anything for this instance.

Any info much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

  • You could ask your insurers, but I would be surprised if you could claim - being scared does not make you unfit for travel per se. You definitely cannot claim back from the airline.

I understand that it was my fault.
Just unsure if there was anything i could do thats all.
I've kind of resigned myself to the fact that i have lost the money but thought it was maybe worth asking on here.

    Thanks for reply
  • Just to add, as the claustrophobia is a pre existing condition, even if the insurers will entertain a claim, they will expect this to have been declared at the time the policy was taken out.

Cross posted! By all means give the insurers a call, doesn't hurt to ask.

But Jet2 charges a fee to process the refund which I believe will be more than the refund itself in most cases.

I did virgin's flying without fear course in 2007 after not flying for 17 years due to claustrophobia and have never looked back.

It might be worth considering it. Have a look at flyingwithoutfear.info

As this would probably come under Anxiety, you would needed to have declared it and had it accepted by the insurer when you took out the travel insurance before it would be covered.

Think you have to visit the insurer in person. Their claims dept is on the 17th floor - just take the lift.

Nothing to do with your question, but it is so annoying ........ it drives me mad.
