Signs that show your speed.
I regularly drive past signs that light up if I exceed the posted limit. I find that it is a very effective and friendly way to get me to drive below the limit.
I sometimes make a mistake and drive slightly over the limit. These signs act as a reminder so I slow down. Far better than speed camera which won't slow you down if you are over the speed limit and then punishes you!.
So what do you think?

Prevention is always better than cure.
For those who cannot and will not be cured, there's euthanasia.0 -
Not so good for all the chavs who spend all Saturday night who can post the fastest speed.
I remember years ago when they had the first one on the M1 in the road works in Nottinghamshire and they had to take it down as all the local bikers were whizzing through to see who cold post the fastest time and to calibrate their speedos.0 -
I don't see why they bother with those things. Why not just install a speed camera instead?0

Think they only go so high above the posted limit.
After that its a big sad face that blinds the bejesuses out of you.0 -
They have been putting these signs up in Scottish Towns and villages for some years now and yes, they do seem to be more effective than speed traps/cameras.0

Very informative signs, my speedo seems to be under-recording.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Because as the OP pointed out, people tend to take more notice of these and stick to the limit throughout the general area rather simply slowing down for a speed camera and then speeding up again.
Is that actually true, though? I'm not saying it isn't, but is there any evidence to show that they are more effective?
Surely people who are speeding couldn't care less about a sign that tells them what they probably know already? Whereas they might care about getting 3 points?0 -

There was some 2008 research on speed indicator devices in London which showed that the speed reducing effect tended to wear off after 2 weeks. I've not been able to find any evidence that vehicle activated signs are more effective at reducing speeds than speed cameras. This information sheet from road safety charity Roadpeace provides a good summary and is fully referenced:

Speed cameras tend to make people brake heavily going past the camera then speed up, but the indicator devices read your speed from some distance so probably result in a longer reduction of speed. This may result in drivers staying at the speed for further beyond the device.
Plus its always nice to get a smiley face:)0
