unlocking mobile dongle

hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows if you can unlock a dongle without using it on its native network first. I've found a cheap dongle which is a rolling contract but want to unlock it to use with another network's PAYG sim.
Would I have to activate the dongle, pay for a month and then unlock it or would I be able to just unlock straight away. I'm fairly skint currently so trying to find the cheapest way of doing this!
Thanks

Surely you had an idea of which one you had in mind.
Dongles are mighty cheap anyway. I have perhaps six or seven of them sitting around.
Unlocked for International travel rather than another UK network.0 -
They cost around £25 locked, and you'll find many unlocked for sale at £30, that's be easiest wa to go.0

Given the relative costs how about buying a second hand dongle on the network with the cheap SIM.
I got a "free" unlocked dongle by the "free" (plus £5 p&p) dongle offer from 3 a while back and an alternative set of firmware which unlocked it.
A quick look on e-bay suggests that the same dongle (ZTE MF627) is available for between £5 and £10.
A google for the free unlock will find you the (relatively simple) way of doing it.
Hope this helps.0
