how long does it take for money to show up in your paypal account?

Thanks for everyone's replies. It would seem that perhaps there is a problem with the Paypal account - I'm just surprised that if a payment had tried to be made and it was returned there was no record.

Anyway I'm going to sort the email account details out ready for when I next want to sell something.

I have been perfectly pleasant with the buyer and when he turns up next weekend with cash he will get his item. I originally posted because nothing like this had ever happened to me before on eBay - that's what made me suspicious.

There would have been a record sent to the paypal email address you'd put in your listing.
Your ebay account did say that payment had been initiated, which is what alerted you to a possible problem.
It could be that the buyer will think that you are a scammer & may not turn up, so it may be worthwhile emailing him & explaining that you'd made a mistake with it.
We have had buyers come on & say that they'd made payment & the seller hadn't received it so could there be a scam going on.
