I take it then that as I still have the item I've foiled his evil plan?

Not necessairly without escaping poor feedback. Ebay say that all transactions must have paypal as a payment method, except cars- and if you get a paypal payment and refuse it then buyer remains able to leave feedback and you have no way of recovering your fees.

However, you can always say to the buyer that you want cash especially as the paypal payment appears to have disappeared somewhere and go from there.

I am still wondering what has happened to the paypal payment though

OP, is there any chance that you've typed in your paypal email address wrong?
If you can't see the email address, relist the item & you can then scroll down to see the email address, check that is correct, obviously don't confirm the relist.

    Mmmm - thinks???
All reference to the Paypal payment has now disappeared and money is now shown in red as owing - so I've invoiced him.

I was assuming that there wasn't a problem with the Paypal as I've received a payment for a survey this week. However, although I've bought things on eBay I haven't sold things for a while. Hubby has been messing about changing the email accounts he uses. When I've got time later I'll have a go at listing something and see what's what. Thanks hermum

You don't need to list something else, just relist similar on the one you've sold, you can then take a look & see whether the address is correct.
As there was an egg timer showing, it sounds as though he did pay & may have reclaimed the payment if it was unclaimed.

Just make sure you don't go making accusations - you may have foiled an 'evil plan' but you may also have an honest buyer who wants to pay electronically and is entitled to do so within the rules, and it just hasn't gone through for some reason.

People mention the PPOC scam but there are some highly scammed items and some which aren't; the problem is that people approach this clumsily when dealing with hte 99% of buyers who are honest.

Just be VERY careful. If you don't want to expose yourself to the scam, don't list collection items on eBay (apart from cars). That's my policy, despite the above ^^^. But you will not do any harm by being very careful how you perceive buyers. Most are perfectly honest, but at least some (including me) will be offended by being thought of as having 'evil plans'.

Sadly, the only way some scams happen is when sellers treat everything at face value. But since there are always two parties to the transaction, and like in an offline situation you can't tell whether someone is a scammer or going to shoplift or whatever just from looking at their face, sometimes you can't avoid it happening. The best thing is to be aware of the risks when you list and decide whether or not it is worth it at that point - not when you have already sold the item in question.

hermum - I've done a mock listing to see what email address was there for payments and it's one that I'm sure my husband doesn't use anymore. Is this going to affect payments being made into my Paypal account which then goes into a joint bank account?

If it isn't the email address linked to your Paypal account then you won't get your payments.
I think that's what's happened in the above case.
The buyer had paid, as you had an egg timer on the ebay page, the buyer would have had notification that the payment was unclaimed & cancelled the payment.
You need to make sure that both the email used in your listings & the paypal one are the same, else you'll end up with no payments & a lot of unhappy buyers.

I think it might give you a clue why the payment is showing as unclaimed.

Change it ASAP to one you know you use, and check which addresses are attached to your Paypal account as well.

I have at least four eBay accounts (original account, selling account that got wrecked, buying/posting account, new rarely used selling account) and thus email addresses attached to my Paypal address and it's a bit of a nightmare trying to keep track of them all, but I'm not having any problems with unclaimed payments.
